Some good stuff here, but I have to admit I stay away from cream in mash to avoid becoming a mile wide over night. Save that for a special occasion. To add a little something to just normal mashed potatoes, try some of the orange sweet potato (no idea what you call that variety in the US) with finely sliced scallions, added immediately after mashing then return to the stove to reheat after cooling from the milk and butter. Fair warning though you gotta mash the hell out of it to get out all the lumps if you don't have a ricer (I don't) so use the yukon golds. For ranch with extra ranchiness try Mythical Kitchen's Ranch wings. Gotta love those smooth Babish tones though, no one else quite measures up.

I dont now if its a german thing or just a me thing but I just cant see eye to eye with amercans making mashed potatoes. i want my mashed potatoes to be lumpy and overworked and mashed. Riced mashed potatoes are truly the worst for me. Creamy mashed potatoes fells really wrong in my mouth and i rather not eat it ever again. But i am interested if othre people here feel the same?

What a coicidence, my mom had a mashed potato recipe with hidden valley ranch that she entered into the hidden valley ranch contest at my county fair. I dont remember if she won. I remember her making it, then last October when I was looking through some old emails, I found the recipe.

No disrespect toward babish but when making mashed potatoes, you want to rinse your potatoes right after cutting them. This helps wash away the extra starch in the potatoes and yields a better mash.

What's wrong with lumps? We're adults, we have teeth, we can all chew our food without having it pureed into baby food first, right? Textural variety is the spice of life!

All are good variations.
Want to really blast your taste buds off into uncharted space? Toss some blue cheese into fully loaded mashed potatoes, then pop them in the smoker.

huh. I wonder what he has against the red bliss potato? He showed it, had a tone about it, but didn't actually cook with it.
Personally it's my fave.

I always add a raw egg along with the butter and milk for some extra yellow smoothness, and some grated nutmeg along with the salt and pepper.

Red Bliss is definitely what someone calls their barbarian's rage ability in D&D. Give me some time and that someone might even be me.

Mashed potatoes seems to be such a basic and fundamental thing. Having it on the show as late as episode #81 seems weird.
