You really shouldn't use water for glazing. Water breaks down the binder and makes the adhesion of the paint weak, which can come off over time. It is best to use an acrylic medium i. e. gloss, matt or even glazing medium. This thins the paint without breaking down the binder, making glazes more stable and adheres stronger. Or at least cover the finished painting with a coat of acrylic medium to seal in and protect the layers of paint. Then your removable varnish coat goes over the top of this.

For a beginner I think the first thing needed is a explanation on what glazing is, its purpose etc, before the how to apply it part.
