Incorporating a lot of ideas from a lot of good artists, this is good. I would like to add, I am learning to start with basic shapes and positioning those basic shapes on the page. Start with a loose sketch until the shapes seem right. Like a still life, for example, shape the banana, the apple, the cup, the flower, whatever is in the composition. After the basic shapes are sketched out, you can begin to focus on the individual objects. Do not commit at the beginning, that is the BEST advice.

Exactly! Starting out, I did the typical 'newbie' approach and focused on one small area and added all the details to it, then ran out of paper for the other items! The best way is to block in all the shapes and get the composition and proportions correct, then move on to values, then start refining the objects.

After some experience I would say it is important to analyse first. How can the motif be simpified? Then try to draw the simplified forms and later add details. Not forget to erase or -hide- constructing lines (by shading etc.
