Drawing Basics - Part 2 SchaeferArt Sage-fire: -Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain- by Betty Edwards, is a good book for drawing. It does not teach you how to draw things, but teaches you how to see thing so you can draw them. It would be a good book for a drawing library. I think -Talent- is something that is acquired not something you are born with. Granted, my Granny was an artist, and she got me started on this path when I was 12. She was only a Sunday painter and taught me what she knew. 20 years later, I have surpassed her knowledge and skill level because I took it to the next step, a passion, not a hobby to dabble in. As a child, I loved to play with watercolors, made for kids, and my Mum would line the walls of my bedroom with butcher paper so I could draw. Somethings comes more naturally to some, though I think it is because they were encouraged, or that they grew up around it. But still I've had to put in the time and effort to get to where I am today. And I have to continue to do so. As for -Child Prodigies, - I think they are the type that comprehend things much quicker that other youth their age. Also a lot of seniors get into painting as something to do for retirement, because they now have the time to learn how to paint.

Practice practice practice! Totally agree with you Brandon.
You advise us to draw from real life which is awesome advice, but when drawing people whether it be real life or anime, can you train your mind and eyes to learn proportions and what not by repeatedly drawing (and in all angles, poses, etc) or would you advise us to practice the kind of skeletal outline method where you draw a circle for the head and draw a line for the eye positioning, nose, mouth etc?
I'd love more drawing lesson videos by the way, I'm sure many others would: ) I know there are a lot of painting videos, but I've always preferred drawing with a pencil.

The only advice, aside from technical pointers, you need to learn any skill is to practice. There are plateaus, giant leaps, and sometimes seemingly valleys. Once you've had the pleasure of having a skill click you see that -practice, practice, practice- isn't merely a platitude. It's the only way (okay maybe there are one or two exceptions) to become great. Hendrix didn't necessarily have any talent. He had an insatiable thirst to improve. Combine that thirst with discipline and you have yourself a master-in-training.

Talent absolutely exists and the word is not interchangeable with the word 'skill'. With that being said a lack of talent does not mean that a person can't develop skill, it's just going to be harder and take longer.
