Traditional Art vs. Digital Art - Which is BEST? SchaeferArt Fruit: I really appreciate digital art. Like it's something that I wanted to do. But I cannot even draw traditionally so where do I start? That's the reason I started sketching traditionally and recreating it in Photoshop. I don't pressure myself much. I think what will help me to improve is to just enjoy creating something even if it's not good enough for me. Just doing it for the sake of enjoying it and not expecting so much that I will be good at it anytime soon.

Interesting vid. I've been sort of thinking about this recently. Partially due to reading stuff by Matthew B. Crawford (Shopcraft As Soulcraft, especially his book The World Beyond Your Head he kind of touches on this kind of thing, at least tangentially.
I recently restarted drawing at 53 after having not even thought about since high school. And especially when it comes to drawing I'm definitely with you. There's just something about the immediateness of the way physical materials respond to your actions, respond to YOU--the friction, etc--that just isn't the same in digital. I have experience with digital to compare, I also recently got a drawing pad and Painter to give me a substitute for painting which I'm interested in trying. I'm really interested in doing oils but I really don't have the space or ventilation where I am to do it yet. (Although I might try watercolor, that I could do) All that being said there are some aspects of digital painting I am warming to, but we'll see.
There's just something about doing it on computer equipment/software that just puts additional, -layers-, let's call them, between you and the end product that produces a kind of disembodied experience. Control of the pen, control of your hand, the layer that the pad creates--mine is a separate pad, not a screen you draw on, which makes it even worse; trying to control/predict what the software's going to do, the computer--god forbid it lags, and on and on. There's just something so much more direct about interfacing with materials in reality.
Although, strangely, when it comes to composing music (I'm a composer, which is what my degree was in) I prefer using a computer program to write. Not sure what's up with that.

This is my first time watching one of your videos and it is refreshing to hear your thoughts. My background is in calligraphy and I love pen and ink and paper. There's a great shift towards/embracing of digital calligraphy and lettering at the moment. I bought an ipad just to be a part of it but then found myself hating every second of it. We are not all born to embrace the digital way and that's just fine. The good thing is that you tried it and now you know. I started drawing again recently and I can't imagine doing it digitally. I know myself now. Look forward to watching more of your videos. I came here after Alpay Efe mentioned you on one of his.

I have a similar difficulty, but I'm trying to push through. I love the thought of being able to paint, but I can barely draw. I know it would be good to learn the basics first, but it's always hard to get excited about the grind when you're not producing anything worth looking at. I'm not exactly enjoying the process, but the goal still excites me. Weird place to be

I'm traditional and will not even try digital as I use computers because I need to and I don't want it invading my love of art lol Oh and the Puffin is our island bird. You can sit at the edge of a cliff and they fly over from a nearby ocean mountain. They walk around and hang out with you. I'm so happy you used this fun bird as your drawing today. Thank you.

I'm the same. I prefer traditional art too. I doodle on my tablet sometimes, but I love the feeling of traditional art. The sound of the pencil on the paper, the sound and feeling of the paper and watching your art slowly turn from a few lines to an actual piece of art

I prefer traditional art because of the energy and feel. It does take a different kind of thought process. I like digital art because it makes it easier to practice at any given time. I love the vibrancy- however, the shortcuts takes some of the magic away

As I see it, my analysis? To those like you that can draw easily----its a gift! I had a classmate in grade 3, he draw superman, batman just like walking

I thing traditional art is more authentic and you can actually touch it and admire how incredible or even how bad your drawing is.
