Glenn Vilppu shows how he draws the figure from his imagination using 3 different media. Thank you Glenn Vilppu for the fantastic demonstration! Glenn's handmade: The hypnotic thing is true. Watching him draw makes my breathing even out and I feel my mind quieting. Drawing can be like a form of meditating, and watching someone who's able to enter that meditative state draw is contagious. Lately I've been watching a demo with either him or Steve Huston before I start my own gesture drawings, just to kind of get my brain in the right place (probably a habit I eventually need to drop and just find in myself, but for now it works.

Age isn't the reason why this video is so amazing. There are people who can teach you skills just like this who are much younger. What all good teachers have in common is the ability to transfer their understanding of the subject to you in the most palatable, efficient, and interesting way possible. That combined with an immense knowledge of drawing is what makes this video so amazing.

his breakdown at 17: 40, 19: 04, 21: 30 about how he constructs the gesture and keeps the flow of his rhythm was super helpful. i was trying to find a pattern for the way he moves around the gesture but i couldnt pinpoint it so i was so glad when he explained. 24: 08 was super helpful too when he showed another method (silhouette/tone) method

Geez, I'm just 12 years old and for someone who loves drawing, hearing him about how he feels when doing gesture drawing figures, everything seeming do easy, but being a total life time skill, I still feel my 4 years of learning are not even close to drawing well. i'm feeling tears brushing through my cheek.
Thanks Glenn

Does Glenn have any books on drawing drapery from imagination? When I look at the work of the old masters, I get the impression that they had some system for drawing those beautiful swirling draperies. Fabric does not pose for an artist so it must have been done from imagination. But what was that system?

Young students seem obsessed with the style and look and do not see the concept and mechanics that style/looks spring out of. It frustrating when I hear them talk about their -personal style- when that would spring naturally out of good solid basics of conceiving form. It will not happen another way.

The footage was colour corrected so that you could see the lines, that's why their skin tone looks so crazy. Proko, The background is almost all white. It wouldn't have been that hard to colour correct them differently. Not that it really matters in the end. Still a great video.

Nice movement and rythym, helps the composition.
Giving the figure and mass relation to the composition.
I don't do this often in my work but Im pretty good at planned
compositions, and will do more soon. Yes I like Glen's work alot,
He's great.

This video makes me thank Internet. And the funny thing is, if I was watching this video before I started drawing myself, it would not make much sense. Now I have struggled with Rhythm, Form, Volume, 'Style', I begin to understand. Thanks Proko!
