I was inspired from some info I came across about painters that would layer their painting to incorporate the many parts of the human anatomy and how the affect the look of the top layer of skin. They would start with a skeleton and then paint over a muscles and tendons and finally the skin over that. I thought it was so cool that the painting could hold so much hidden depth.
I love to draw human figures, especially superhero comic book art. this video really helped me understand the detailed approach I should take if I want to have accurate designs. Sometimes I prefer to draw aliens with a human like anatomy eg. Martian Manhunter. It allows me to get creative and break some of the rules. But just like playing jazz you first want to understand the rules before you break them.
