Some people have different methods that work for them, but here's how I always draw faces: I draw the nose first and compare my drawing to the reference photo. When I'm satisfied that the nose is correct I then start to map out where the other features should be. I draw straight vertical lines between both sides of the nose so I can start to get a good idea of where the mouth and eyes correlate to the nose. It oftentimes takes trial and error to find the correct points, especially for the eyes.
An indispensable tool for me is my digital camera. Throughout my drawing process I take progress pictures and compare them to the reference photo, that way you can see mistakes clear as day. Comparing your drawing to the reference photo with just your naked eye can be deceptive, so as they say -pictures don't lie-

I am definitely a victim of avoiding things I-m bad at. I have several old -complete- drawings that just don-t have a face or proper hands. I usually sketched in the head and stopped there. It-s embarrassing honestly.

Man i'm Still kinda here bc i haven't focused specifically on figure drawing in YEARS the using symbols thing is a real struggle! One of these days i wanna learn anatomy properly. Fingers crossed for next yr --
