one thing that happens lately to me is that nobody critiques me. people sometimes compliment me. so im a. very rough self critiquer, because that's just how it should be. at some not too late point you should learn to teach, and also learn to judge. if we cant judge, accept ourselves and figure our way forward then nothing changes, if energy of curiosity or true purpose isnt clear, then they're reasons why people wouldnt be willing to push themselves to that extent. anyways, i've seen people do critiques, i was taught to be much softer and more positive with my own critiques, which in my curiosity back then pushed me searching for all appreciable things i see in a piece of art i'll critique, and how it may have played out in the person's mind and what they were trying to get at. harsh. critique. is a thing, you can break someone's vision about the art they're making, and it can hurt harshly, they might eventually change their vision, drop out, or in miraclerous cases improve (unless you impose that all this is just a learning craft process, which tends to slow people down years and maybe decades trying to -learn- what is and always will be abstract representation and expression of life and reality in ideas of choice) or it can be that you're trying to learn something and you have someone who has gone through their own learning effort and have them guide you through it, correct -wrongdoings- which then again, it takes long unless the person forces themselves to be a processing machine that lacks any expression of itself! its tough for me deciding what people need to proceed with to say -its just a straight feedback process- that can get someone out of nurturing their art vision as they go (which if they really are wanting and feeling to make this art, it makes a huge difference) which is so much MORE important, otherwise, -why are you even doing here trying to make art? are you even passionated or have even a word to speak out visually through art? -
unluckily i did it reversed, and it has taken months to push aside everything previously learned and regrow my ideas about art to a point i feel. enjoying it and feeling like, it is actually worth something, after working my love through art out and practicing that! (which is a couple of ways i think about drawing and painting on my own) i now feel its so much easier interpreting what other people's lessons say, what books say, and deciding wether i want to practice or apply that stuff on my work. you need to expose yourself to variety of ideas presented about art out there, the variety of people trying to teach this stuff, recognize each has their own ways, own tricks, and odd ways to put it -pretty-, before you can more freely find yourself in your art, connect with your purposes (which are important to live on the side with you) and manage things together so it benefits you objectives. there's a lot more i could add up, but this is. just a youtube comment after all.

My perspective on life has changed since I knew Marshal. An incredibly inspiring person. I wish I had the opportunity to meet face to face. What does it take to be like you? What kind of genetics do you have? I wonder how you grew up in a family. You give the impression that you have never encountered a problem in your life. Or rather, as if you were easily solving every problem you encountered. How do you manage to be so positive? As a person who has not met the right people throughout his life, it is a chance to get to know you, even at least on youtube. Thank you. -

Some things that seem obvious but would highlight about criticisms are also:
1. Just as important as knowing how to receive good criticism is knowing how to make the most of it by making a correction to your work right away to make sure you learn from it;
2. In a job that needs a lot of criticism, prefer to choose only the most important one.

Hello Stan & Marshall! I always get sick to my stomach getting critiqued. because I spend so much of my own energy critiquing my own work until its completed that its another blow to my confidence in my artistic process. What's my thang? Finding this podcast! I'm so glad it's been years since this was posted so I can binge these!

I understand the fear around getting critiques, but as a mostly self-taught person I will say, it is valuable when you can get them. I can't even get critiques on my drawings when I desperately want them! I have tried posting to dA or tumblr, but people there only give likes and never talk about what I can improve on.

Irrelevant but you're probably uncomfortable because of the chairs more than anything. My back aches just looking at those chairs. I bet you never -do art- in an uncomfortable chair like that.

I have critique but I also love giving it as an artist. Although, I think being open to other people's opinions does grow an artist, especially when their aim is to make an income through art.
