Portrait Oil Painting Demo with Cornelia Hernes - Proko Macie: I tried a paint-along to this video twice (taking 4 hrs to cover the first 1 hour of painting. Both times my proportions were way off! I usually make a detailed underdrawing and do a lot of measuring or griding first. It's a challenge for sure being able to nail the proportions without those measurements; I'm sure it would take a lot of practice to get better at it. It was really fun to try and I could see it speeding up the painting process a lot if I got better at that. It also makes the painting process flow a lot better and feel more natural / less rigid, plus you don't have to freak out when you start losing the lines of your underdrawing and worry you'll lose your markers.
I also found the add-remove-add-remove flow interesting. It worked well to remove with clothes and clean brushes, but bamboo skewers did not work at all for me.

I wished digital paint worked this way. Sometimes I don't want to auto load the ink back to the pen let me move around the canvas with a partiall loaded brush. Why can't I have a manual reload. Also, when mixing colors it's so lame. I am certain they could use matrix mathematics to map what color should be formed when mixed. To avoid that problem I got when I tired to mix saturated yellow with saturated blue on a digital painting software.

Certainly one of the best (most thorough, clear, & informative) lectures on portrait painting I have found. Being a bit OCD about painting & educational content about painting, that compliment comes after 100-s of videos.
Thank you Proko for providing this content & also, I feel this is a wonderful portrait so hats off to Ms. Hernes. Thank u for sharing ur time & experience as well.

This was one of the most subtly beautiful painting demos I've ever seen. Amazing approach, amazing likeness, and a gorgeous result that's so much richer than just a copy of the photo source. The cool, almost lavender tones of the underpainting make the warmer skin tones absolutely glow as they're painted in. This was delightful.

This is so relaxing. Omg lol. She is so articulate and wise-the fact that she-s conveying all of this through such a wonderful accent is just perfect. This is the calmest I-ve felt all week. Thanks so much for sharing your time, knowledge and talent with us -----

you are quite brilliant, especially the way you are able to articulate so well, what (and why) you are doing. I'm also a portrait artist and often watch these kind of video tuts for inspiration. Thanks

I must find a way to add this knowledge to my stylized illustration style. I find lines extremely appealing but this method of building the colours is appealing as well.

My number one issue with portrait paintings is getting the likeness right. I don't trace over, but copying a reference picture on the side is almost impossible for me

You are the first artist I've ever heard say that working smaller is your choice. I love things smaller too - certainly no larger than life size.
