How to Start Your First Garden (COMPLETE GUIDE)
video description
I'd love a basil / herb video - I'm growing rosemary but just guessing and I (maybe the ton of rain) killed the thyme already. Would LOVE more info on growing herbs! Same for the strawberries - I'm saving this video for all the details! Just the little details in this video explain a huge part of why I only got a small amount of strawberries last year!
You and your brother do look alike. Thank him and his wife for going on their started journey with us - I've learned a TON!

Just got my little container garden going on my balcony. It’s south facing, so I’m basically filling it with herbs and the small veggies I use all the time. I’m trying to develop a green thumb, so this is going to be a journey.
I planted 15 basil plants so far, and am considering more in my south facing windows. We make a lot of pesto.
Strategically placing everything so it can get enough light and not block out neighbors has been an adventure, but so far everything is happy and I’m finding new seedlings germinating every day! So exciting!

This is my 3rd year gardening with raised beds/4th year with containers and I’ve realized, I actually know a lot more than I think watching this. But in so many ways I’m still such a noob lol. I’m finally using a cool planning software this year (seedtime) to maximize cool crop gardening and succession sowing. I’ve been failing so hard with cool season crops and I realized it’s bc I was starting them in March instead of February. Hopefully, I get a really productive season. It’s going to be a really great learning year.

Just bought four of the birdies beds, wish I could have such a quick set up for mine! Even though I have gardened a lot a still like to watch your videos for new ideas. I hadn't thought about adding a cattle panel type trellis between the beds, so definitely planning on changing up my layout plan to accommodate the trellis! Thanks for the inspo!

Really wonderful to watch you guys. Enjoyed the video tremendously. I am in the process of starting a real garden in my yard and this was very helpful. Start slow and easy and don't pretend to be an expert at the beginning.
Looking forward to my journey with your down to earth approach.
Thank you for your humble advise.

Great to see you guys together and starting a new garden.
Any reason you didn't buy in bulk rather than bagged mix
I'd probably have bought some green waste compost a sack or 2 of perlite and some coco coir or peat moss to make a bulk mix instead of buying bags.
Then maybe top off with a few bags of top quality stuff.

Interesting take, Kevin. I'm more of a less is more proponent. So if I HAD to create a garden on concrete, I'd do lower beds so there wasn't enormous sheets of metal used and I didn't have to fill the thing up to the top. Most veggies dont sent roots lower than 15 to 20cm. And I'd definitely be growing UP those fences!

Wow I had ordered four of these beds a while back and I got no instructions about a brace that needed to be added and I didn't get a brace why isn't it included with the bed
Otherwise I enjoy a lot of your suggestions.
So now that my beds are already filled how should I brace them what would be the best way

Definitely love that she turned the longer ones I would arrange it in the order that I cook. I run out the back door and grab herbs but I might not run the whole way out and get vegetables so I want those nicer beds close which is really smart and then further back more vegetable beds very cool design.

Any chance you could stop using the hideous misogynistic phrase rule of thumb The rule of thumb was that you could beat your wife as long as it was with something thinner than your thumb. Please just say something like as a general rule. I'm going to get a million virgins commenting on this comment.

Hopefully you turn this into a series for this year! I would love to see updates like every other week or even once a month on how his garden is doing. Even issues he is having and how you would fix them. It's always nice to get questions from someone who is new that you don't think of yourself.

I just cracked open your new book yesterday Kevin, and I'm really enjoying it! I was just thinking we need more full guides of entire processes, (in between season maintenance, planning, starting and harvesting etc) and here you are with a complete first garden set up guide! Love that!

Don't use good, dried firewood if you can help it. You've already added value drying it or bought it dry. An old stump, or some punk wood, or old grey firewood would be better. A chip drop might be ideal, since covering the plastic from solar radiation will extend its life

Darn it I didn’t get to watch you put that black trim I struggled for hours to get it on my bed only to see it halfway off this winter. Kevin do an instruction video of the best way to apply that trim. Only reason I haven’t bought another bed is that horrible trim!

Kevin - this video absolutely rocks! Being a new gardener, I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. They are always informative with practical advice while making it entertaining (I had to rewind to catch what was going on at the fence - nice touch)

So great getting to see you alongside your epic brother in the garden. And I'm especially glad that you took a little field trip to Armstrong- my happy place. I love Dr. Earth potting soil. and when I'm feeling particularly fancy, I grab a bag of Ocean Forrest.

You two were surprisingly so professional and serious in this! If this were me and one of my siblings we couldn’t help but to be goofing off the whole time
Good luck to the epic bro! I hope his first year goes great and we can get an update on his progress!

I enjoyed the video learn many new things. I’m not successful with seeds because when I planted them 6 years ago I had them in front asouth facing windows and got leggy. I just might try again this next week. I live in 9b zone. Thank for all the info.

This video needs to be shown in schools. It is so incredibly in depth without being overwhelming. Like, it’s so easily digestible and I think there’s going to be so much takeaway from it for a lot of newer gardeners, as well as seasoned. Ugh! Love it!

Maybe it’s where I live, but when I’ve planted Red Cabbage, lettuce & strawberries, the birds have pecked at or just plain destroyed every. Single. One! Nope, don’t feed nor attract birds in any way. They just came along and destroyed my hard work!
