A two liter bottle is a great way to start hydroponic gardening. I made this as a guide for kids but then decided to record a video about it because it's such a fun way to get into hydroponics for anyone, no matter how old they are

I use paper towel as a wick and here is why.
The paper towel will last long enough for the roots to grow to the water so at that point its very easy to remove the unnecessary wick.
With the rope your more likely to damage the roots if you remove it and whats the point of it if you dont need it anymore.

Believe it or not, i have had an idea similar to this. the hole where the cap is, is where the roots will be. But I thought the plant would fall in the water. I could have it done, but I don't know how to do it, and don't have resources.

Would 'Chux' cloth perforated kitchen wipes work as a wicking material and keep the fine coco-coir from leaking out into the water? The roots should be able to eventually penetrate the tiny holes in the cloth.

One, you can buy cotton string at the dollar tree real cheap, works and lasts.
Two, wouldn't algae be Not good because it will absorb the oxygen in the water which will deprive the roots of the plant?

can you inform me about how to identify the fan leaves. which leaves are the fan leaves my girl is getting very close to flowering but she has so many leaves i don't know which ones to pick off

If you fill your nutrient solution a little higher level - where it just touches the bottom of the grow media, then the media acts like the wick, and the rope or cloth is not needed. :)
reply

Ha I literally just done this today then decided to look up if people had done it and you have done exactly what I done.
I used a sponge as the media though and it doubles as a wick

if we were to do this as a kids experiment and do some spinach, what would I need to do for the nutrients? Are we still needing to do all 3 parts of the Flora nutrient kits?

Live North of Tampa on a pond, Water in Florida is the worst in the country. I still filter my water out before it goes to the garden. Thinking about this on my fence.

why wouldn't make the drinking hole touch the water? probebly a good reason. just wondering. wouldn't need a wick if the medium is slightly above/touching the water
