We put a lot of time into our gardens, so let's make sure we get the most out of our greens! Lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, and many other leafy veggies can be harvested many times over using the cut and come again method. As long as you don't damage the growing tip or crown of the plant, you're in good shape. Either take scissors and chop off the outer, mature leaves, or come in with a high-quality and SHARP chef's knife and slice off just above the crown. This method makes harvesting mustard greens and all sorts of other 'odd' greens a breeze as well, so don't discriminate! IN THE VIDEO J. A. it should be really cool to live in a place where winter mean 25c and summer mean 35-40c. that mean every day is a growing garden. while here in Canada, Quebec. if you scrap your starting season you are doomed. 20-25c during the day and 9c-12c during the night. it's a nightmare to grow something lol. you have 1 chance per year, if you do a mistake you are doomed, and it's depressing lol.

Great video, one question though. You seem to remove most of the leafs, and soon after state that the number of harvests are limited due to lack of energy. If you harvested less each time, and thereby left more leafs behind to gather sunlight, wouldn't the plant be able to go on indefinitely?

I just started gardening and I planted romane. Its developed into a stalk. As it grows, the leaves wilt and it just keeps stalking. I wish I could post a picture lol but hopefully this helps me, thank you

You mentioned basil. mine are taking a very long time to grow. but we've had quite a bit of rain and cold days. Anything I should add to help them along? If you see this comment, Thanks in advance

Thanks for explaining how many harvests we can get from the come and cut again method. We have had our lettuces for six months now and will replant more. They have given us great salads

I have red-leaf romaine & when I cut leaves off, it continues growing up. Ive noticed my Swiss chard is doing this as well. I harvest & then it gets tall, skinny & begins to fold over. Help!

Just another YT vid that does not show the end results. :( How hard would it be to post a follow up vid? I'm guessing because is does NOT work. Your lettuces no mater what you do will bolt.

How do you solve for it when your lettuce plant has gotten much taller than the video? Is the crown higher up when it is tall? Or will it naturally be the same level you've shown here?
reply

I just harvested my Spinach for the 3rd time and the smaller leaves are still growing good. This will be my first romaine harvest though and want to make sure I do it right.

Thank you for such a helpful succinct video. I learned so much in 4 minutes! My lettuce often goes brown on the bottom. I think it's root rot. Did I plant it too deep?

Straight to the point, Im gonna use this method. Previously I was ripping leaves off by hand and my plant was dying pretty quick but this will save me! Thankyou: )
