Temporary Sleep System for Cold Weather Camping

This video is about my sleep system for cool weather camping, including an SOL thermal bivy, down sleeping bag and Thermarest sleeping pad. Louise: I have the SOL Escape Bivy, which IS breathable, unlike this one. I use it as an outer bag for my down sleeping bag under a tarp in cool weather, to protect my bag, and I like it. I have had it for about 5 years and it has held up well. It has not ripped at all. (It is not a milar bag) I accidentally purchased the non-breathable milar one at first, and found the condensation was a big problem as Shawn did in this video. I was sopping wet within a couple of hours! There is a big difference between the less expensive SOL bivy and the SOL Escape model. Shawn, it would be interesting to get a review on the Escape Bivy from you.
Nice job with this review; you have saved your viewers from wasting their money. :-)

I have that bivvy but don't use it anymore, it doesn't breathe at all. I've since replaced it with the SOL Escape. works a lot better, breathes a decent amount or at least from what I've done, more than the 2. 0. I got it down to 50F by itself with good layers. Puff Jacket, t, thermal top and bottom. As for Durability I can't say but I wouldn't trust it long term. I use it inside my goretex bivvy as a summer bag sometimes or to add warmth to bags in case it gets colder than expected.

I'm still using a 20+ year old British Army bivvy bag, never had condensation, never leaked and once it's folded back on itself makes a perfect dry bag for the sleeping bag. Down side is it's bulk, but you can't have everything. You're a braver man than me for even trying that bag out: )

Heyho - thanx for sharing your experiences with the SOL. I'm really troubled with condensation and bivy. On my mountain overnighter the humidity is so damn high that my sleepingbag gets too moist. I see your bivy bag isn't also the best solution. greetings edi

I was considering the SOL Escape, which is reputed to be a breathable heat reflective emergency bivy/sleeping bag. Seems I will stick to a self-inflater mattress on a mylar reflector blanket with -5 C sleeping bag. Thanks for the good review. Useful.

I think you got the crap one, I've just used a similar sleeping bag, Rab Neutrino, with the Sol Escape bivvy, in the U. K. 's Lake District and it performed really well. I nearly bought the one you have, glad I didn't now, thanks!

Hey Shawn! Always interesting to see other peoples sleepingsystem. I still use my old sleepingbag from 1986. It still keeps me warm but on bushcraft nights I only use my woolblanket and a logfire

Thanks Shawn: We seem to have similar experiences with the bivy, strickley emergency & short term use. I found better results from attaching their reflective sheet above me to the overhead tarp. Brian 76

Good video, seems to me if it doesn't breath and causes condensation it would make you colder, of course you know that but I'am just referring to the company do they really even test those bivy's

wet down. yuck. its bulkier and heavier but I prefer synthetic for that reason. not mention its cheaper. looking for a inexpensive quality bivy. Thanks for sharing
