Here We Go! 1st Snow of the Season, Off-Grid Solar Electricity Installation, Hanging the Front Door

Peak autumn color is quickly replaced by a blanket of snow as I continue preparing the cabin for winter. Outside, I install the last metal roof panel and a ridge cap on the breezeway, install an adjustable steel racking system for the solar panels beside the greenhouse and dig a trench for the cables to run back to the cabin. Inside, I finish assembling the door to the front porch and hang it on hinges, temporarily placing the wood insert that will be relief-carved over the winter. In the basement, I insulate the cellar walls and cover one wall in 1' pine boards to install the solar inverter, panel and batteries and I move the water storage tank into place. Before finishing the insulation on the main floor, I run the wiring for lights and switches and take stock of what hardware items I need to finish the electrical system for installation this week.

I think Cali's getting a little bored she needs a four legged friend to play with but two dogs could be a bit much but they'd keep each other company or she's tired of the winter already she wants to go fishing, hiking and swimming in the warm water or maybe just give her a big hunk of bear meat. I'm always amazed when I look at the cabin and realize you did it all by yourself, it looks great.

This video is so beautiful! It s been a privilege to watch this project from the beginning, and so much fun to wait for the first snow.
Remembering that you worked outside last winter I feel relieved for you to have a warm space.
The mood of this video is wonderful capturing the transition of seasons. The music is so descriptive and your photography is stunning. Thank you for sharing.

It s really great that you re getting solar sorted for the cabin. But I m not sure that ugly orange panel frame fits in with the rustic cabin, rustic garden look. Do you intend to keep it like that or build a wooden frame to put the solar panels on? Or shed/workshop and put the panels on the roof? I like the way you did the frame for the other solar panels.

Gosh those solar towers looked heavy. Cali made me smile when she wouldn t give up her throw toy and laid on the door when you were working. They certainly know what they want and have us humans in the palm of their paws. Good work and lovely footage of the swollen river. Take care, be safe. Dorset, UK

SHAWN & OUR CALI we got snow down here also! I think Mother Nature is having a hard time to make up her mind of what to do and where to put the cold weather! OK & Texas has seen 25 degrees weather and we in Illinois is 28 Big ways of different states for us! Seems like WINTER IS HERE to stay!

Love your videos. love your wonderful dog, Cali too! I miss my Samson (loveable Cocker Spaniel who I had for 14. 5 years, just can't bring myself to get another only to lose them at this time. even though I love dogs, cats, and all animals. Thank you for showing playful Cali.

If you were going to make a below ground cistern there how deep would it have to be to not freeze? As a kid in the Texas Panhandle, we knew where the cisterns were for a lot of abandoned farms and used to got swimming in them in the Summer.

Some of your best Fall footage ever, loved seeing the rapid flowing streams as as well. Are they too far to use as a source for water at cabin or greenhouse and your gardens? I'm guessing they're outside your personally owned lands as well?

I was looking at the radar the past week and luckily the snow circumvented my area. Clearly it went to the north. So pleased you accomplished your goal of getting the cabin reasonably closed in by Thanksgiving. Ho. Ho. Ho. Stay warm.

Greetings from Maine! You Did It! Shawn. You're inside your cabin before the first snow fall! Congratulations! Lot's of very diligent hard work in the past year to reach your goal. We're watching and so proud of You! Linda

shhhhh I just told my husband that you were talking to the dog. See, the attraction to your videos is that you don't talk. I said a man who shuts his mouth and builds things is an anomaly, It'skinds like a trip to the zoo.

loving the progress. Just an observation, on the door, hinge side, there is a gap between the door frame and some of the timber logs. where it looks like the logs aren't quite straight. Will that be filled in later?
