Outstanding guys.
I like to catch ocean crabs. Up here in NY/ NJ, we do not have the Stone Crab. We do have others tcst are edible like Blue claw, Atlantic Rock crab, Calico Crab, Johana Crab.
For handeling Crabs, Sea Robins, and any potentiality dangerous sea life I handle such with Chefs 14 inch Stainless Steel Tongs, this is a practical good safety meaaure for handling Crab, Catfish, Blow fish etc.
I also use them like Chop Sticks to catch Fresh Water Lobster- Crayfish in Streams, Lakes, Resuveirs, Rivers etc.
It's interesting that the Claws on Stone, Crab have a Crusher and Ripper Claw as the Maine Lobster has.
Boil wine put some fresh cut ot crushed ginger root pieces in it and drink it hot or warm, its healthy and helps to deal with cold/ Flu symptoms.

Health, like safety, and moral Liberty, is it's own reward. Do what we can to safeguard them.
Your call as to how you apportion the risks vs. your perceived benefit.
My advice? If you're not sure about the risks, please safeguard your fellow humans. Don't for example, be castin' 2 treble hooks on a lure toward a crowded dock. Please. And similar.

Great video Darcie & Brian. Stone crab population is nearly non-existent this year thanks to the Red Tide outbreak (Sarasota, FL, and the market prices are super expensive. In my experience with crabbing, use raw chicken for blue crabs, and frozen hog feet for stone crabs. I just use regular wire traps and catch both species based on the bait used.

It's thier tail underneath that determines thier gender. The carapace is the top cover of thier body.
In the pnw, crabbing is by size & gender. The best way to hold them is by thier hind legs so you can measure across a set of notches they have on thier carapaces of the 2 special of crab that is caught, Dungeness & red rocks.

You look great with a tan. I grew up in the sixties and seventies, where a tan was a sign of a healthy/outdoorsey person. Now I'm in my sixties and have to go in every 6 months to get Squamous Cell Carcinomas (cancer) frozen off with liquid nitrogen. (Face, head, arms, back) The clusters are ugly, the scars are ugly. You don't want that.

Even a BOY could do it? Somewhat of a correct statement, but you don't need to keep reminding us. Yep, I have built crab traps, set trout lines, as well as cooked over an open fire with what I've caught or harvested. 13: 10 I'm so happy you chose NOT to take both his claws. I know they should both grow back and he can still scavenge, but you would then leave him vulnerable to predators and it would be harder for him to find mates. Sustainable fishing everyone!

Personally & speaking in General, I use 1/2 a stick of DYNAMITE with my Zip-Ties to ward off any Crab Trap Thieves. That way the thieves have to buy a new boat to return. Good for the Economy Boat Sales +++ Creates JOBS!

Get Well wishes for you both, and prayers for your Dad. BTW, Brian, it looks like you've been eating pretty good! I used to catch Dungeness when I lived in OR. Cooked fresh, Crab Louie salad and spaghetti!
