The Do-s and Don-ts to Fishing! (Every One Needs to See This) Howabouthetruth: All good advice. Another big mistake anglers make quite often, including pro bass fishermen, is they get so excited, they reel too much line in, right near the boat, to where they now have only a couple feet of line off the rod tip. Now they can't reach the fish at all with a free hand, because the length of the rod is far greater than that measly 2 ft of line off the tip. I like to keep a good 4 feet to even 5 feet of line off the tip when I'm ready to lip or flip a fish in the boat or on the bank.

For transporting long rods like that just buy some 50mm (2-) PVC drainage pipe, it's dirt cheap, light, smooth and rigid enough to protect the rod even from someone stepping on it.
To prevent the rod from slipping out of the pipe just tie a bit of elastic chord on the close end of the pipe and wrap it around the base of the reel, if you do it right getting the rod in or out of the pipe doesn't take more than a few seconds.

Great advice gabe I've broken too many rods over the years, the worst time was with a st. croix rod that has caught so many Spanish mackerel and blue fish. Was paddle board fishing and lost my balance and fell over backwards breaking the rod and sticking the lure in my back as I went. I'm sure I looked disgruntled coming up on the beach with a paddleboard and broken rod in hand and topwater lure hanging out of my back.

I used to have a metal flex steel caster that telescoped, and my dad did the same thing in the truck except the rod started turning back on itself Loved that old rod, but mistreatment made it unusable sadly. I used to catch a lot of panfish with it. I am 70 and still remember that rod I used when I was eight and younger. Used a hefty cane rod for other fish. But guess it's showing my age, eh? LOL

Perfect timing. Just planned a camping and fishing trip! Gonna be my first time. I-m 63. I plan on catching my first fish, cleaning and cooking it. I-m in Melbourne Beach, Bluegabe, if you and Kelly want to come by to help me out! June 3rd-5th at Long Point Campsites. Gonna be approximately 60 of us. Pull your boat right up to our campsites!

Great video! Good advice! My problem is breaking rod tips and damaging that first guide! I don't do it often. but that is my break! ugh. That comment about Kelly catching only 10 to your 100. probably needs revision! :P More like everyone else catching fish and you catching good b-roll! :P Love you guys! Have a great week!

Outstanding video Gabe. As soon as you said your boy broke a rod I said -door-. My wife looked at me funny until you got to the end of the story. Then she shook her head and rolled her eyes at me because I was grinning with an -I know everything- look on my face. Been there, done that when I was a kid. ;-)

Cardinal rule one for me is never grab your rod beyond the upper handle. Which means never grab it more than 10 inches after the reel. Most rods I use are made for that. There are other rules for me but you cover what I basically tell people that fish with me.
