I have a kubuntu installation that takes only 320 mb ram at the starting (all effects-animations off). Tried Lubuntu live test, it is 450 mb.. Is that possible? That could also be cause live test images are heavier on ram, since everything have to be runned from ram? I' m using this distro on a mini pc z83 fainless 2gb ram , that I use mostly for kodi, browsing and light office work when is not worth to power on my workstation. I also have to say that apparently when I move a window is way smoother on kde.. on lxde (live) things seems less responsive.. could it be that kde manages to use better the crappy intel video card on the z83 ?

I tried to switch to KDE once - it's very customizable and responsive, you can make it look like or be as lightweight as XFCE, but...
The ONLY thing you can NEVER change is horribly ridiculous naming tradition with -K- letter everywhere!
Konsol, Kompare, Kamera, Karbon, Konqueror... and other trash with K prefix like KDIff, KMail, KGet etc. This crap is just ruining visual aesthetics of GUI!

I recently switched from kde to xfce,
because the boot times were terrible to me, even without any startup apps, the GUI would take more than a minute to load, atleast to me I'm happy with xfce as compared to my experience with kde,
Also the idel memory consumption I have is around 600M so not sure how did you get the 1G+ on the bar graph
Debian 10 + xfce core

KDE is using the Wayland compositor. So it should be more responsive if XFCE is still on X11. Now, adapt XFCE to Wayland! On a a laptop that I'm trying to install Linux on, both still seem to be too much. Unless, it's just the web browser, which is where I'm running into the slow issue. Ugh! So much to learn.

I am a debian kde user, but I think that although kde uses less ram memory, xfce is even more stable, and in the linux scoop videos I have seen very advanced customizations in xfce. I'm going to start testing manjaro xfce, that is, the latest packages on an xfce desktop to test that desktop stability. Greetings.

Thank you for the video. I'm thinking about jumping from xfce to KDE or any other DE, but I need to have exactly the same features that I have in xfce. Xfce may be going to have some perturbances when migrating to gtk4 and CSD. So, even if the RAM usage is the same I don't see any reason to continue using it.

Not downplaying XFCE, but they have some competition on their hands now. I've been using Manjaro KDE Plasma 5 for the last 9 months and loved it. Manjaro was downloaded as version 18, Illyria, now I've upgraded to 20.0.1 Lysia flawlessly last week. -Ubuntu cries in the background-

This will on part show my age and yes I AM VERY aware that I am by NO MEANS the oldest member here, but I remember days where s MAXED system had 256 kB of RAM (it takes 1024 kilo bytes to equal 1 mega byte, which of course takes 1024 more to be a gig and so forth.)

I have used a few of DEs: Gnome, XFCE, and KDE Plasma.
Whenever I started using Gnome and XFCE, I always come back to KDE Plasma. Imo, it is one of the best and slick looking DE, and I am happy to be an avid user at that. KDE Plasma all the way for me!

I like Plasma, but in Kubuntu 20.04, it had a noticeable memory leak over time. More frequent CPU spikes as well. In my experience, Xfce is generally more lightweight overall. I can run Xfce on older PCs that can barely run Plasma.
