We actually don't know yet for sure, what the consequences of being spied on are, for the vast majority. I do not believe that currently, those services are used to your detriment. The big problem I see are twofold: on individual level, the government can very easily put a mark on you, say if you have a dissenting opinion that you are spreading. They can pull up all kinds of your history and exploit it however they see it fit. In other words, if you are a good obedient boy that speaks when spoken to and doesn't bite, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. On a societal level, they can very easily gain information about crowd behavior, or real time reaction to an event, or early threat indication, such as protests. Again, good obedient boy that speaks when spoken to and doesn't bite has nothing to be afraid of. But if you doubt, even a little, that the government (any, not just left or right, or American or Swedish) might not have your best interests in mind, then you will be safer with a degoogled phone. Perhaps not at this moment, but when the push comes to shove, definitely. But then it might be too late.

Just got a new phone after having the same phone for 6 years and am blown away with how Google controls absolutely everything. You have to tie all your activity to Google so they can seize and store every single thing you do on your phone. I did a Smart Switch and all I got was really old stuff Google had stolen from years ago while my current contacts, pictures and data are no where to be found. I would love to have a phone that is first and foremost a phone where you can start from scratch and merely download the apps you want and not have to bother with the games, kiddie stuff, shopping, banking, TV, movie, music, etc. etc. etc. I have stuff saved on backup hard drives from about 20 years ago I have zero interest in today other than my travel photos. What on earth would anyone want with billions of people's selfies, text messages and emails? They say where all this stuff is stored uses up an immense amount of electricity.

I would be fine with Google as long as it does not run in the background. I have been messing with disabling individual services and receivers, but that is a slow process as I don't know if something breaks until I actually see it. For youtube I use Vanced with the Vanced manager and microG. All the benefits of the software and even login capability without any of the issues. I would love to see a complete Vanced suite of google replacements, but it might never come.

I read the other day about a new phone called Planet, coming out of Europe that has no Google. I guess we have to wait a while longer for it here in the states. It also has a dedicated, slide out keyboard too. I wish you could run good old Linux on your cellphone. There are Linux browsers and email providers but I think they can only work on laptops and old time desktop computers.

Do we have to de-Google our laptops as well? Do we give away as much privacy on laptops by using YouTube and Google Drive signed in to our Google accounts? I enjoy about a quarter of the YouTube recommended videos which I would not have been exposed to, I want to keep that and I have to sign in to my Google account for that, at least on my laptop (wifi-connected).

I figure you can use google maps with just about every permission turned off, and with some random account maybe.
What-s crazy is, when you leave google, you can see how little you actually need them. Android auto is definitely nice, and a lot of google apps are nice, but Android alone is fantastic, and there are plenty of FOSS options at this point

I recently got a pixel 3a with calyx os on it. My cellphone service is through an mvno that requires an app from the Google Playstore to run. It uses the data side of mobile network. Is their a way to allow Google apps and services to be installed on this device?

You sacrifice your privacy for convenience and comfort. Freedom has a cost you're ready to pay. It is guys like you who contribute bringing upon people mass surveillance, and in the end a global dictatorship serving oligarchs will be enforced. Cheers !

Hi,
Once you used some google apps on you phone there is no more privacy because you are associated with its IMEI number and its footprint is known. So I think there is no half way to degoogle a phone.
