How to Rename the User-s Folder in Windows 10 (2021) - Hetman Software
video description
A cleaner operation would be to move things onto a secure external drive, then reset/rename the entire system folder - all done.
I don't know who this -polite- IT helpdesk person is - other than that it's a self-made tutorial and this BIG DISCLAIMER should be the opening statement. Considering nearly every article explains that editing the registry can cause malfunctions and data loss, it should be explained at the start that your Settings/System/About screen should display the type of Windows running on your machine.

Thanks a lot! Seems to be working. Hopefully didn't do any mistakes --
P.s. After posting this comment, I saw other ones and am glad that I didn't read any of those before just doing it -step-by-step-! You can't skip anything unless told. It's not enough to sign in as Administrator and simply rename the target folder, e g. Maxim > Max. You MUST do the sh-t with registry part, otherwise your computer won't simply understand where all old paths are leading to. Btw I have Windows Home 10 and it worked well! ---

This doesn't work for me... neither ways... I tried going back after changing all the files to the name I want, and it says that I will lose things if I continue, so I have to log out... And the folder inside the file itself still never changed names... Is that is what screwing me over? If so... How do I fix this?

If I were you, I'd put all of my files on USB drives.-
He also said that he does -not- recommend you doing this if you are not an expert user.
Because of this, I'm fine with my current username. I would rather have my current one than a bunch of problems that I could just not have.

I did this step by step as shown and it stuffed up my computer, made the loose desktop items and files also made the other user start loading in as a temp user . It was hard getting it back to normal but still lost alot of files which I'm still trying to get back.

Is This In Answer To The Problem?
A person gets a new second hand computer. Then puts the old drive (for storage) in the said W10 desktop and then can't access the said hard drive's files and folders. Is The Answer Yes?

Do not try this method in Windows 10 Home. If you have installed more than 10 programs your eyes will bleed because I potentially wasted 5 hours and it's still not fixed. I'm just gonna make a new user and start over.

Tried this. Took forever and something went wrong right at the end somehow and I had to restore my whole computer and I lost all my pictures, videos, music... Everything Be cautious when doing this

I couldn't change the user file name, it's giving me the error (The action can-t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program), file is not open anyhow. I'm using Win 10 Pro
