How to use Windows Sandbox - a lightweight virtual machine - Kevin Stratvert learn how to use Windows 10 Sandbox. Windows Sandbox provides a lightweight desktop environment to safely run applications in isolation. Software installed inside the Windows Sandbox environment remains sandboxed and runs separately from the host machine. A sandbox is temporary. When it's closed, all the software and files and the state are deleted. You get a brand-new instance of the sandbox every time you open the application. Software and applications installed on the host aren't directly available in the sandbox. If you need specific applications available inside the Windows Sandbox environment, they must be explicitly installed within the environment. Windows Sandbox has the following properties: - Part of Windows: Everything required for this feature is included in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. There's no need to download a VHD. - Pristine: Every time Windows Sandbox runs, it's as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows. - Disposable: Nothing persists on the device. Everything is discarded when the user closes the application. - Secure: Uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation. It relies on the Microsoft hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates Windows Sandbox from the host. - Efficient: Uses the integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU. Prerequisites - Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education build 18305 or later (Windows Sandbox is currently not supported on Home SKUs) - AMD64 architecture - Virtualization capabilities enabled in BIOS - At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended) - At least 1 GB of free disk space (SSD recommended) - At least two CPU cores (four cores with hyperthreading recommended) Installation - Ensure that your machine is using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, build version 18305 or later. Usage - Copy an executable file (and any other files needed to run the application) from the host and paste them into the Windows Sandbox window. - Run the executable file or installer inside the sandbox. - When you're finished experimenting, close the sandbox. A dialog box will state that all sandbox content will be discarded and permanently deleted. - Select ok. - Confirm that your host machine doesn't exhibit any of the modifications that you made in Windows Sandbox

Good stuff. LoL carefully avoided the topic of running sandboxed keygens in this presentation! - probably its primary use... Anyway, in online top 10s of Sandbox solutions the Windows Sandbox always comes last, I guess that's because there is no way to monetize that entry, whereas the other products may pay for click throughs. BTW like others have indicated you forgot to mention in the video that the virtualization capabilities must first be enabled in the BIOS/UEF although you DO mention this in the description...

Hi, this maybe a dumb question I guess but Does anyone here has a download link of windows sandbox but .zip version with all dll files, exe file of windows sandbox and all that without/instead installing windows sandbox on windows features? Because I have a windows 10 home edition pc.

I'm running Windows 10 Education latest version, I have enabled Virtualization in my Bios and have Hyper-V working fine, it's not running now but I have enabled Sandbox in the Features panel, and restarted a few times, still no Windows Sandbox App on my PC. Not sure what to do now.

What you showed us is illustrated version. Ok well nice and good. But happens when you install apps that run like normal softwares, but contain virus without leaving a message like the one in your video. How can you know?

Excellent. Was not familiar with Windows Sandbox and literally had a scenario come up today where I definitely would NOT want to run a particular executable on my own machine, but in an isolated 'box' of a machine? Sure.

How isolated is this sandbox acutally? I uninstalled Edge on the host system and started a sandbox but Edge did not work.. got some error. And can you do a test where you run a ransomware attack inside the sandbox?

Hello Kevin, I don't know how to get the iso into the virtual machine. My question is, do think there will a time in the near future where a user can download a virtual machine that is ready to be used? Thanks
