Software engineering of today is not the same as software engineering of the 80s/90s
Back then we barely had STL -bloat-, not code generators like today. We didn-t even have ctrl-c ctrl-v nor stackoverflow or reddit programming. We also didn-t have every single person trying to recreate the wheel many times over all with varying 3rd party libraries.
What we did have was a hard ass boss who demanded quality code or you were fired.
I remember using VMS with versioning on the files and for any request to be looked at, any more than 10 versions (saves) a file meant you had to answer some difficult questions.

that electron apps bloat that you were talking, it doesn't give anything for the end users, but it just the way how the developer build apps using the electron API, building apps these days are far easier and faster than 20 years ago where you need to write everything from scratch, API these days creates & contributes the bloats to the software development, that's the trade-off, faster & easier apps development from the API/SDK lead to a more heavy-weight finish products.

I guess it comes to want to get out of your system. More advanced users tend to keep theirs lean and down to basics, and noobs tend to want a system with everything installed for when they eventually might need it. The latter aters to those new to linux, more then often comming from windows. As long as mote people start using liux it is ok by me. New users will becme experienced evetually, and get the hang of the way of linux.

One man's essential feature is another man's bloat. For example: gimp.vif gimp doesn't have a bunch of very specific features like layer mask merging that will cause people to say -gimp sucks, can't even do X, going back to photoshop -
So they have to add a bunch of features that 80% of users will never need, but to the few who need them - they are essential and without them the software is barely worth trying.

You guys gotta learn the difference between Bloat and Optimization.
If you wrote Super Mario in a modern language the build would be huge compared to the original. That doesn't mean it's bloated.
The original team spent months doing weird performance hacks go save every byte.
Not doing that doesn't mean your code is bloated. Just that it's not optimized.

All the Bloat on Android and is one of the biggest reasons I root and flash a custom rom to get stock android with only what I need. Especially windows and some manufacturer skins especially on samsung devices THEY LITERALLY HAVE AN APP FOR EVERY SINGLE GOOGLE APP. At the end of the day its highly subjective. I

My personal definition of bloat is parts of software that I do intend to use ever and that take ressources (RAM usage CPU usage disk memory etc....). With this definition -bloat- is a subjective term, because it depends on what aspects of a software you will use or not.

Bloat software can be a very subjective topic. One may consider some features to be bloated while others may consider it useful. I think something can officially be considered bloat software when the majority of the users consider it to be meaningless.
