Manjaro Ditches LibreOffice For Proprietary Garbage DistroTube Rant incoming! Manjaro has made the decision to no longer ship with LibreOffice on it's ISOs in favor of a proprietary office suite called FreeOffice. The Manjaro community is not happy about this decision and neither am I. - https://forum.manjaro.org/t/testing-update-2019-07-29-kernels-xfce-4-14-pre3-haskell/96690 https://forum.manjaro.org/t/including-freeoffice-is-a-bad-idea-was-manjaro-roadmap/96754

I hate to say it DT but compatibility with MS office is kind of a big deal. I know this is old and didn't happen anyway but they could have avoided the whole mess. My main machine runs Manjaro KDE. My son's laptop runs Manjaro KDE. M y daughters laptop runs Manjaro KDE. What I don't understand is if they really were concerned with MS office compatibility they could have chosen OnlyOffice. It's the suite integrated into NextCloud. I have been using OnlyOffice before I even had a NextCloud server. The desktop editors edition is FOSS and is 100% office compatible. When my son has a project for school the files he turns in must be office compatible or done in that google cloud garbage. This is an example of why we run OnlyOffice on our machines. When sending files to normies they need to be 100% compatible. LibreOffice just can't do that. When people open your LibreOffice files saved in an MS extension often the formatting is garbled or some other problem. You should check out the OnlyOffice Desktop Editors. Even though you have NextCloud try the desktop editors out.Their a great solution for people who don't have NextCloud but need a compatible office suite. They are not as feature rich as LibreOffice, but they are still really good. They are available in the AUR. I had to edit the PKGBUILD myself to get a working and up to date build. That was a long time ago. Don't know if that has changed.
Not a lot of people know about OnlyOffice. People need to know there is a FOSS solution to the issue of document compatibility. I have not personally tested the claim of 100% compatibility but nobody has ever complained about the files we've sent them. Maybe you could make a video!! OR not. FYI
EDIT: Looks like OnlyOffice is part of the regular repos now plus the AUR package is also now up to date.

The old Red Hat and Suse 'box sets' were the first chances I had as a noob, to get away from Windows. ME, despite system restore, nearly drove me batty. 98 and 95 were much more stable in that distant past. But the problem was always the same. You could not know what the underlying OS was doing w/o your permission, at least as far as my 'expertise' went. We all can, and do screw up. Individually, and collectively. Considering the extensive bad behavior of the 'leadership' of Microsoft, I can not fault the free software community for drawing a line. Plus, Linux in general, is far more user friendly (than it was early on) in every way unless you want to go purely lib're. Oh, and thanks to the local Linux User Groups at my university, for helping me get deeper than the Office Store Box Sets. Great Rant, BTW!

To be fair. Excel is so solid. I tried to use a few free or open-source spreadsheets, but when you try to make some-script- function, you get quite a lot of headaches.
Basic in Excel is poop, but it works. If you go to LibreOffice you have to -translate- all MSBasic to OpenBasic, with is quite obscure.
It supposed that you could use Python scripts in LibreOffice, but that was never close to being a real thing.
And worst shit is that if you only need spreadsheets, you still have to download the complete LibreOffice suite.

Manjaro is complete garbage currently, weird project decisions and very low quality of next releases. They are trying to focus windows 'clickers' and they are making everything shitty for the typical linux terminal guys. We like things working out of the box too , but they are doing it wrong and this distro will die in next years.
Also worth mentioning is that every critique on the forum will get you banned or silenced, so as you can imagine they are full of shit and this distro is overhyped af.

first, anyone should know manage packages being arch user.
i don t know about how could you download the suit from pamac, as i m not use it.
but think would be better choice to leading beginners throught wine, cuz so, people'd feel like home, comfortable using traditional interface.
because not like us who'd learn new one as needed case, they refuse to changes so far, even though they won't heavy business job

This kinda seems a little overblown to me, I don't see any reason why I personally would be less likely to suggest Manjaro. Manjaro's key strength has always been it's package manager, whatever default office software it comes with is kinda irrelevant in regards to questions like is Manjaro good for gaming, is it easy to use, easy to maintain, etc.

RIP Manjaro for me I guess.
I had issues with Manjaro (as in what they've been doing) for a while already. Manjaro is more unstable than Arch. Also, the Openbox edition comes with the proprietary Sublime text editor. Guess Vanilla Arch is the way to go now. I don't care about Arch or Arch-based distros, but this still sucks!

I was using LibreOffice when I was using Windows. It is very compatible with MS Office...I used to save my documents in .doc and it was capable of opening in MS Word......soooooooo they are full of sh--....for some reason I have a feeling the Manjaro devs are lying, something ain't right

A way over the top reaction. Providing LibreOffice is available in the Manjaro repository this is a non-issue. I recall you slated Joe Collins reaction over the Linux Mint must go article on Tech Republic yet this is much worse. Stop throwing your toys out of the pram you are better than this!
reply

The only bad thing I'm aware of with LibreOffice is that whenever you save a document as odt and you open it with Word, it screams that there's something wrong with the document even though nothing (that I noticed) was altered because of incompatability. That's even more on MS than LO.
