He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. -Actually-, he says with a grin, -Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, -I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux.-
The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams -I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!- Coolly, I reply -If windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?- I interrupt his response with --and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even you were correct, you wont be for long.-

This ambiguous naming kept me confused for many years. I used to wonder, how can both Android and Ubuntu be linux when they are so different?? And why is Android not similar to so-called -Linux Distros- ? Why is Android not called a Linux Distro ? I also used to wonder how can a single man (linus) write a huge operating system ?
The system needs to be called GNU (1.) for educational purposes by removing ambiguity. And (2.) because no one calls Android as -Linux Distro-. The reason Android is not called Linux Distro (even unconciously) is because it is not GNU. Hence Linux Distros should really be called GNU Distros, which Android is not.

I don-t really care if my bios has (edit) blobs anymore, or if my wifi driver is gnu certified or not. Debian testing is not only the best Linux, but possibly the best operating system. Hey, are there any tablets using Debian or Linux - not Android? Would be nice to be able to wipe an iPad and install full Debian Linux, or even Ubuntu. I doubt that will happen or it won-t be easy. So what really keeps people from using Linux is because the best thing you can do is to use what you have. If it ain-t broke, don-t fix it. Good luck

Linux is only a Kernel ! What is a Kernel ? It's the core of the Operating System it is the base program who talk directly with the hardware. Then what is GNU in GNU/Linux : GNU Not Unix ok it's Not Unix but what is GNU : GNU not Unix (bis) . It;s a programmer joke e.g. a recursive loop withoout end. Basically GNU tools are unix clone of basic operation tools who works with the Kernel to form the base of the Operating System that is GNU/Linux. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Linux MInt, Arch, etc are distribution (Distro).

I'd interject for a moment. What you're reffering to as GNU/Linux in real live is just Linux. Calling the entire Linux as GNU/Linux is technically incorrect, because not all distros use gnu software. I hope you learned that debian should be called as GNU/Linux, but the whole Linux should be just Linux as there are distros like alpine that hates gnu and don't uses gnu software.

jk btw. Nice vid. I think this is one of the reasons why Linux can't go mainstream. There is not even a common name to it. The regular user just gets confused by the -/- in the name. Imagine if Windows was called Windows/Powershell or something like that

Thanks.... I have had a hard time explaining this to other people. Mostly because they do not know or they think otherwise or because they are in a firm believe that Gnome or KDE is Linux as well. I guess this misconception is because people still, mentally, live in a Windows world.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Richard Stallman.
Also, I'm extremely curious as to what RMS thinks about Visual Studio Code, since it is a Microsoft product, but it's free AND open source.

after a Vanilla Arch install theres just no other way, and once you got it down you can figure any other Distro out.... BTW Jeffry Epstein Didnt kill himself
