The Rules Of Netiquette For How To Act Online DistroTube In the early days of the Internet, there were certain rules that everyone was expected to follow in online forums, web chat and usenet newsgroups. These rules were called netiquette and it is something that is sorely lacking in how people interact online today

I was actually referred to this video, as a post I placed in a social media group I'm a part of. I had basically pointed out how sad it is to see how quickly some people attack others, and how hurtful it can be. This is spot on!
I'm a big fan of the way you presented the -Rules of Netiquette-. Simply put, well stated, and easy to understand. Thank you. I, for one, am so tired of seeing people beaten down after they have placed an honest, kind, and innocent question or opinion. I think a good rule is to also remember that not everyone will have your exact opinion on any given topic... and that is okay! Try and remember to learn something, rather than immediately attack them for their point of view. (Kind of goes hand in hand with not responding immediately to a post... Which I am thrilled that you mentioned! Time does a lot by way of clearing your mind of emotional response!)
All in all, I believe this topic is one that needs to be taught to anyone looking to be active on any social media. Thank you, again, for sharing!

Excellent advice. I do find some forums tend to be friendlier than others. First message I ever posted to an Arch forum was actually after watching you present an excellent video describing installation via the Arch wiki. Instead of welcome to the forum I got scolded and told to contact you for help, this despite the fact I clearly stated your video used their wiki for installation. I sorted the issue but haven't bothered with the forum again. Now, Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi, used both for years and never seen any flamed threads. Guess there must have been some.

Not lying about sarcasm being taken the wrong way. That's what the winkie or the lol is for. Poe's Law takes that into consideration. Without the winkie, there's no way to tell the difference between satire/parody and a serious extremist comment.
I really believe in trying your best to use good grammar and spelling. I'll throw in a few lols, ikrs, smhs, and iks, but using U as a substitute for 'you' or 4 as a substitute for 'for' is irritating to me. I don't like ableist language, but it does look resomething. lol

I think sarcasm works better on the Internet today than it did in the 90s. If someone in a political forum says -Yeah, let's just throw a bunch of nukes around and end the world- you can be pretty sure they don't mean that. The person who says that is probably a moderate type being a bit nasty in a debate with a more hawkish type. Context can be a substitute for tone of voice and body language online, if not exactly a perfect one. -Reading the room- helps a lot with identifying sarcasm.

I don't know how many times someone wanted to share the -good news- to me on Linux and programming forums. I didn't know it was a sin to use free and open software. Hell has only TRS-80s so you don't want to go there, I suppose.
On the programming forums we'd get -challenges- that were obviously homework questions. There was an instance where I did the problem, but with inline ASM. The person was mad because they couldn't use it in class.

There are actually a few ocasions where you have to write shortly. Twitter, journal ads, etc. You may know expressions like lol idk rtfm, they exist cause they works. This was studied by the early bell's telephone developers as the -mathemathic theory of communication-, finding how amount of noise could be allowed and the message still would be understand. Trust me im a linguist lol

Hey DT, I've noticed in the last couple of videos that your lighting is a little off or you've been in a fight recently. Your eyes look like they've been bruised or something like you were in a fight and you ended up with two black eyes. Hopefully not. I'm hoping it's just the lighting. GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!! oops...

This is by far one of the best and important videos on the tube right now. Hopefully many people are watching it here and after i have shared it. I personally think that Netiquette should be one of the parts in school. Thanks for your good videos. Keep up the good work !

I was hoping for this to be more descriptive of the emergent rules that people have come to use to express themselves online, but unfortunately it was just more prescriptive of what this guy would like to see. Not as interesting, in my opinion.

Notice tombstones use all caps. In strict legal terms, all caps is a dead thing in law. Capitis Diminutio Maxima. The world is under Roman Civil Law, fronted by Scripture, but backed by the Talmud. Have a happy treason. :)
