Petya ransomware and why we need more of Linux - Cybersecurity and OS diversity - The Hated One New Petya based ransomware is spreading through the world encrypting disks of patched and unpatched computers. It doesn-t just encrypt all the files on your computer, it targets the entire filesystem, which means the whole operating system is rendered unusable. Initially, the ransomware was receiving payments of $300 in bitcoin, but since their email address to exchange the keys was blocked, once a disk gets encrypted, there-s no going back. This ransomware appears to be more professionally coded, doesn-t have as many bugs and is distributed through several vectors of infection. To spread through the Internet, Petya uses the EternalBlue exploit, a nickname by the NSA for a Windows SMB-v1 vulnerability. Once it infects just one device it spreads through the entire network via PsExec by accessing administrative credentials of the infected computer. Windows is too dominant in current times. And it requires a whole lot more attention to keep the system safe. Sys admins and individuals in general are going to be forced to diversify their systems otherwise they will be just as vulnerable as their lazy neighbor. Linux will eventually become a necessity. It-s not just that it has smaller market share that makes it more secure. Its architecture with separate root and user access and the presence of incredibly diverse distributions make Linux the most secure and reliable operating system there is. And on top of that it-s completely open source and free. So why should anybody ever pay hundreds of dollars for systems that fail on regular basis? Apple, Microsoft and Google are going to hate this fact, but developers are going to have to support Linux as the most secure and fastest platform on the market

6: 21 -But from our politicians we are going to hear the same bureaucratic prayer every time: 'If our bureaucracy is not working, it's because we need more bureaucracy. If our spying -spine)- doesn't work yet, we need more spying -spine) X'D. - If centralization of the internet doesn't work, we need more centralization. '. yeah we sure -should)- know better T_T-
It took a replay of this part of the video and me looking up the word 'bureaucratic' -to see the spelling and definition, - but I'm kind of shocked at how true this statement is. And unfortunately it defies a law of common sense - aka adding more of something generates more of it X'\

I was working over at TNTs site near hinckley rebuilding their windoze servers after they were infected - it was mentioned the virus was let loose from their Ukrainian office. I think there were around 60, 000 desktop machines and 1200+ servers in total. it was an expensive time for them, but could have been much much worse. Obviously their AS400s and Linux machines were working fine so at least their business didn't suffer too much.

We remember all that Windows was never meant to be connected with other devices. Now we harvest what we sow. Let's be honest, most people don't even need insecure Windows that's a ticking time bomb. Even without such a massive developers' support, Linux will do just fine for most people. How do you see the future of the Windows operating system?

If you want more linux then make it better. The current state of linux is unusable for a casual user. Windows is straight forward, you find everything you need without experience. On linux even I, as an experienced user, struggle to find what I need. The user interface is AWFUL.

Two day now on linux ubuntu and I am loving it. After years of using windows and being afraid of linux and its learning curve, i can already safely say that conquering that fear and turning to linux was the best thing i could have done technology wise. ALL HAIL LINUX!

I agree. Linux needs more support because of how secure it is. What's the point of pay a license to Microsoft just for using Windows that isn't even safe. I use Linux as my daily driver and I am more than satisfied with it. Windows must stop.
