The QAT!! I'm a big fan and user of it myself! Since there is no -U- in there, I just pronounce it like -cat-, BTW. Makes for a laugh, too. :-)
Here's my take on the QAT (it is not exactly the same as yours):
- I prefer the QAT to show below the ribbon, because of 2 benefits: more real estate to put buttons (from left to right), and the buttons show in color which is added value (e.g.: check the Clear Filter button). Because I too put my most used functions on the QAT, I more often than not collapse the ribbon, resulting in MORE room for the Excel grid, rather than less. ;-)
- The first 9 positions are hotkeys that you can access by using the ALT key as a modifier key (like SHIFT) rather than as a key to initiate a key sequence. That makes them quick to use (I don't think you mentioned that). It's a good way to luring people into using the QAT.
- Paste Values: here's the quickest shortcut I know: Right-click + V, or: Menu Key + V. Always good to know. ;-) Having said that: on my QAT it's in hotkey position no. 3 (mnemotechnic: CTRL+V => ALT+3).
- Here are a few suggestions for functions to consider: Table Name, Toggle Full Screen View, View Headings, Queries and Connections, Autocorrect Options, Display the Selection Pane,...
- I added the Solver, too, but it keeps on disappearing all the time... :-(
- As far as your rules (and exceptions) are concerned: I agree completely, and let me add one more:
- I like to put buttons that open a submenu, like: Cell Styles, Format as Table,...
- And last but not least: don't forget to put the Format Painter on the QAT!! there's no shortcut for that...

G'day Mynda, Great that you have an episode on QAT. I mention QAT to nearly all my Excel classes. One interesting thing about the placement above or below the Ribbon is Below is likely to be the preference for old timers to the grey Office 2003 user interface but above seems to be the fashion for those born to the Excel Online UI. Now, what interests me most is that very long list of choices in the -All Commands- Customize Popup - I dearly want someone in the Excel community or Microsoft docs to make a list of the Items in that list, next to a list of all the Ribbon placements in another column, and even, another column that annotates what these items do. Care to rustle up the volunteers amongst the gurus?

I never find other users setting this up, which is so strange to me. Whenever I have to change computers, I make sure to print screen what I have to make sure I don't lose it. Protecting that and my personal macro workbook are priority. A few important to me on the QAT - group and ungroup, because it's great for temporarily collapsing big data to see different things close to each other. Merge and unmerge. Unhide windows and view macros Select current region Select entire pivot table(to copy and paste it fast) and text to columns

Almost the same as mine. I haven't managed to fill ten yet so I've not kept undo and redo, but I might put them back up for the stack options. I assumed I was alone in having select objects in there, very useful (as is the selection pane). I have new blank query in power query because I use it much more often than the get data from options, as I usually try and get my data more dynamically via a PQ function or whatever.

Thanks Mynda. The QAT is super useful! I use it mostly for macros in my Personal Macro Workbook that I want available across all open workbooks. I tend to memorize standard keyboard sequences for in-built Excel procedures. But, nice to know the options if you want to drop something into the QAT. Thanks for sharing :)) Thumbs up!!

Many thanks for this, Mynda. The Paste Values is particularly useful. I hardly ever use a straight Paste! Because I'm a keyboard junky I've written a little macro for Paste Values that is fired when I hit Ctrl + Shift + V. I have other macros for things I use a lot and which are triggered via Ctrl + Shift + [letter].

Solid points and good info. I placed -Merge across cells-, -Save As-, -Refresh All-, and -Print Preview-, along with some others that have easy commands (like save, open, new) I just prefer to get these with a click than move my hand to the keyboard. I will have to add clear filters!

Hello. I was wondering if there is a way to make the paste function automatically -Match Destination Formatting-? I have searched and searched and really haven-t found anything concrete. It-s a pain to have to right click and choose the option every time. TIA.

I had a few macros that are help me on Word and Excel, doing processes that would require 5-6 steps (copying from sheet, adding coumn, pasting values and formats etc). I assigned the macros to buttons on QAT and can run them by just Alt+number them.

My favorites in the QAT are increase/decrease decimals, fit columns to data, paste values/formulas and clear all. I use those a ton. I think I may also add refresh all button as well after watching this video.
