When I want to create shadows on an element - for example, text - and have more flexibility, I convert it into an object. Then I create a copy, apply the color and blur I want, position it, and keep both linked. That way, when I edit the text inside the object, the shadow updates automatically, and if needed, I can fine-tune the positioning afterward...

Also, since is a mask, you can use any other tool, such as brushes to draw the shadow if you absolutely need something different. Remember the shortcut AltClick on the mask to switch the layer to the mask, so you can paint the mask just like a black white layer.

Or you can make the text smart layer. Make a copy of it. Apply Black Color Overlay. Position it a little offset to the original copy. Apply Gaussian Blur as per taste. Now shadow will update when you update the text on smart layer.

I know the point of this video is to show us not to use the normal drop shadow thing, but how did I get this far in life and not know that you could directly click on the shadow in the image and move it around!

Why did it automatically create a mask layer when you made a solid color adjustment layer I feel like I'm missing a step. Is it because the selection was in the clipboard

I remember when you had to dupe the object, soften the edges, drop it below the subject layer, adjust the opacity, and nudge it. Times have changed.
