Windows Programs on Linux - Introduction to WINE - Chris Titus Tech In this video I am going over Windows Programs on Linux using Wine, what it does, and how you can use almost any Windows program on Linux. How to Run Windows Programs on Linux? 1. Run a Virtual box inside Linux that is running the full version of Windows 2. Run WINE What is it? -WINE is a compatibility layer and stands for WINE IN IS NOT AN EMULATOR! -It translates Windows System Calls to a POSIX-compliant system call that Linux can read Why use it? -Its extremely lightweight and often times programs will run just as well, if not better because of the low overhead. How to use it? -Creating its running environment... called a Wine Bottle. $ WINEARCH=win32 or win64 WINEPREFIX=PATH wine programname -Customizing the environment... using WineTricks or winecfg $ WINEPREFIX=PATH winetricks -Note: Can't undo customizations and packages require installation in a certain order -Common Best Practices 1. Using independent bottles for each program 2. Killing all Wine Processes 3. Only use trusted sources... Windows Viruses also run in Wine 4. NEVER use Wine as ROOT or launch via sudo command! -Games and what works great 1. DXVK translates games in real-time to from DirectX to Vulkan Currently DX11 and DX10. DX9 support being added this year. 2. DX9 and older games can sometimes struggle because they aren't translated fast enough, which leads to poor performance. 3. Make sure to follow my Guide on the DXVK and ESYNC here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTky9UoYVsk&t=305s 4. I'm very impressed with how well you explained this topic. I've literally spent my whole day trying to make sense of Wine's wiki page, and I've been using Linux and Wine since 2015. This is meant to point out that you hit it on the head...a lot of Linux veterans are terrible at explaining how to do stuff in Linux...or they're so arrogant they make it difficult on purpose.
As for -front ends- for Wine, I hate them and find them clunky. That is why I finally decided to stop being lazy and learn how to install Windows software in Wine the old fashion way (e.x. using the terminal like you). I'm not suggesting it's not somewhat valuable to learn, but after so long messing around with Linux, I've come to learn that doing as much in the terminal as one can is the best way to go.
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge in an easy-to-understand way. We need a lot more people like you in the Linux community.

Wine running faster isn't really true. Windows user mode / kernel mode is directly integrated into the system and WinAPI calls don't translate 1-to-1 to POSIX calls, so there'll be more overhead. MS aren't idiots, the low level NT stuff in Windows is as good as it gets and they can do dedicated optimizations. Linux isn't better in that department. The performance difference only starts to show in higher level components that MS filled with telemetry and bloatware, that's where Linux wins. If you don't have a low end system, it just won't run faster, I.e -unused ram = bad ram-.

Wine is an amazing program overall. My only complaint though with it, is that when running certain games at fullscreen, and when it comes to the instance of them crashing, it is nigh-impossible to exit out of the crashed program unless I logout, and then restart. I wish there are other ways to prevent this from happening in the future, as well as fixing it.

It would be nice to just have a one-click convert to Linux button. Terminals, command, and kernals, and .dll's and execution cc++ libraries and xinput and wine, and wine bottles, and frameworks, and x-app, and required giplus and component installation and integration configuration core fonts systems analysis wine config dot net windows integration systems format.

Chris, seriously, thank you for this video. The last thing keeping me from using linux as my daily driver was a single program that would not work. With this tutorial I was able to get it working, and now I can finally put my poor old windows laptop to rest. Thanks so much!!!!!!

I never understood this about Linux users. They will talk mad sh-- about using WINE and Windows programs but I don't know one user that doesn't have at least one Windows VM on their system lol, we all freakin' do it, we all need to hop into windows every now and then.

I was following you perfectly until you went to fonts but i couldn't tell how you got back to the main menu. At that point I was done. If you are not going to go over things completely, why do at all?
