These two phones are way overpriced for their offerings.
I am not sure who the Librem 5 is aimed for but at $749 and $2, 000, it's waaaay over priced for such a sub-par phone.
The PinePhone is marketed for the average consumer in mind - not just Warren Buffett or Jeff Bezos.
For comparison purposes, the PinePhone specifications just does not stack up well compared to LG V20 (a phone that's 4 years old.
For these two Linux phones to succeed, two things will need to happen:
1) Hardware specifications - how much phone you get for the price you pay. will have to get better.
2) Software offerings - the number of decent programs for usability will have to improve.
I hoping that the missing pieces can be filled in to bridge the gap to make Linux accessible to the general public.
I am rooting for both of these phones to suceed.
I am looking forward to seeing a successful Linux phone someday.

I think the Amazon comparison is apples to oranges because Amazon was directly competing with Google and Apple for the convenience market, whereas the Pinephone is not competing with them in the same way. The Pinephone is targeted towards a smaller, privacy-oriented corner of the market where Google especially can be easily surpassed considering their business model is selling consumer data. The Pinephone probably won't become as big as Android or iOS but it shouldn't be too difficult for them to carve out enough of the market to stay afloat, especially given the price.

this guy talks from the ignorance. No offense. Linux is much secure than windows. Linux phones are more than phones, are computers, not sure if you see the potential of this. Of course you can talk and msg. There are many distros, some of them are more advanced than others. Linux phones are not for the main public and they are not to make money. They are LINUX, not a coorp. These are phones for people with hopes on free software and believing that techology belongs to humanity not to the big corps

As a current user of Samsung and Apple today but having used in the past Windows Mobile, 1st Generation Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry, (with frequent rooting and custom ROM's on Windows Mobile and many Android devices) - I took the plunge today and preordered the -PINEPHONE - -Community Edition: KDE Plasma Mobile with Convergence Package- Limited Edition Linux Smartphone-. I'm looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.

For a linux phone to be successful it need:
A complete, working, reliable os. Distros can follow later.
Apps. Could be ported from other os until developer start turning to linux. At least apk install with full compatibility.
Added value. Best thing if linux phone maker can add hardware upgradability or universal modularity.
Hide all command lines. That'll scare most people away.

There is no credible argument that Windows is more secure than Linux. Also android is built on Linux. Think you need a bit more perspective on this. But idk how windows security even plays into this since windows phone is long dead and Microsoft is looking at an Android variant. You also failed to mention that Linux is the most used operating system around just not the desktop.

eh, even if the pinephone and librem fail.
their hardward so unlike software its not like they'll just disappear.
technically even if it fails now.
the pinephones and librem phones that are already out there will slowly get developed in software.
and then if the concept gets revisited in the future well: ) we already solved half the problem by then.

I don't know if there's a future, but I do like that they exist at all. Having Debian (Mobian) or Plasma Mobile on a phone is great. Plus, you are truly free from the Google/Apple ecosystem. I like Android, and it has a lot of FOSS apps available for it, but as long as Android is owned/developed by Google, it will never be truly FOSS.

Linux actually has great software, Krita, Gimp, Libreoffice, Blender all can replace commercial applications.
Fairphone is an excellent alternative to Pinephone and Librem. The Fairphone is actually the most powerful of the three and the materials are sustainably resourced and the workers are paid fairly.

Linux is less secure than Windows? And you base that on some articles you've read? Windows is know to had/have SERIOUS security errors and wholes! Thanks for saying it in the beginning and I haven't wasted my time watching the whole video. Who knows what else you're saying next.
