Very clear explanation of a topic that confuses many beginner and amateur photographers.
35mm film cameras became a standard in terms of explaining the field of view related to lens focal length because they were smaller and easier to handle than cameras that used larger film sizes. They were more popular because of this. Kodak introduced the APSC smaller film format at one point, but the quality of images from a smaller piece of film was not very good. These film size standards were adopted for use in digital cameras because photographers were familiar with them.
With film, ISO speeds were considerably slower than current digital cameras can achieve. ISO 100 gave a very good image. Photographers would use film rated around ISO 64 or slower for the best quality image possible. Fast film was rated at ISO 400, but could be pushed to 800 during chemical development. Just before digital cameras started to achieve usable quality levels, the top speed available with film was ISO 3200 - which was a pretty grainy image. Digital cameras have surpassed that over the last ten years.

in section 6. 1 2: 14: 27 how much of an effect is caused by holding the camera higher or lower or standing more or less on the right or left side of the subject as opposed to the differences being caused by focal length? It appears to me that some of the difference is attributed by standing more to the subject's left side. 2: 15: 45-2: 15: 47 in the 154mm shot her face looks wide, but in the 218mm shot her face look more narrow when comparing the two. And then it looks wider in the 270mm shot. I would think it'll be progressive as the focal length gets longer, but did his stance or her position play a part in the changes as well?

in section 6. 2 2: 19: 42 I don't understand what is the point of changing camera positions to explain that a 50mm is gonna make an image larger than a 17mm. I think it would be better understood if the differences were made at that same position especially for showing the detail of the grass in the two images. naturally if you move back from a position your perspective is going to change, there will be things you will see that you didn't see before and some elements are gonna be hidden like the grass behind the pavilion for instance.

On lenses, I saved and got a cheap Canon Rebel t100. GREAT, blew my phone away at what i could do. Then of course i want more then the 18-55mm kit lens it came with. I found refurbished Canon web site and got a Cheap lens i could afford first. 75-300mm EF full frame. So i can Zoom in like a champ. Birds, squirrels, Deer, and the Moon. Now i know WHY. Full frame lens on Crop sensor. Not sure what it would be at that point. But anyways. Back to video, AND THANK YOU. i love learning. I do photos for Fun: )

thank you for this fantastic course. Ive decided to get a cheap second camera and get cracking. I feel I should say that I work in the computer, 3d graphics games and stuff and I guess I should of started in the real world, its kind of funny cos everything back makes sense, its crazy but yeah this little course here has put everything in perspective. its a Doh! moment.

Words like 'excellent' are very good, because, sometimes, you cannot describe things exactly, with other words. I cannot describe this fantastic course with other words, so, I just say, it is excellent.
If I may suggest, I think, you might make several parts of this video, in addition, and let people use each of them, as thy need for that specific subject.

I have a Tamron 16-300mm super zoom lens and it's just so convenient for vacation photos. Granted that the image quality isn't the greatest, but good enough for viewing on computer screen or a normal size print to hang on the wall. Not needing to switch lenses during shoots and miss out on the moment is sometimes more important than a pixel perfect shot.

1: 58: 37 How did you know what files to go into and modify to get the desired effect that you wanted to create with the emulated lens. If i was novice at navigating through files and un-hiding the hidden file types, how would i know what to do to make the necessary changes? its seems like its a bit much for a someone who isnt computer savvy to do.

Why on Earth photographers couldn't just use the numbers and values in normal order like normal people? Everything in photography is so confusing and everything is upside down: small means bigger, faster means smaller numbers, bigger means lower quality. that is utterly insane. I will never be able to understand this crap.

Another thank you for your time in sharing your knowledge to a newbie. Coming from a sound background, you'd think i would get it, but it finally dawned on me how images compress and expand shot from different distances. To think of it this way and then choose a lens or focal length. Great teacher.

The difference in the image sensors is not explained so you get the actual facts, but more whether you are an amateur or a professional photographer. MP is crucial to the number of points your photo consists of. The same applies if you use a black and white, grayscale or color filter.

does that mean that a crop censor can get wide angle shots without getting the sides of the image as distorted? since you get the narrow looking effect in the center of the censor but the outer edges where the distortion and bent lines occurs would occur not on the censor? im confused

Thank you so much for this video! I inherited my fathers cameras a year and a half ago and I didnt know where to start trying to figure out what to do with them. This is exactly what I needed to grasp basic concepts and lingo of photography.

Wait, dont images also get softer wide open on faster lenses versus smaller apertures. I noticed that my lenses may open to f1. 0 or 1. 4 and stepping down to 2. 0 makes it tack sharp.

I use Primes a lot because theyre really good for the money. The up front cost for a good zoom is expensive, though if I can find a way I can justify it, Ill snag a nice zoom.
