Was reading comments today about Defender. Tech Experts like yourself were golf into detail about how it doesn-t protect and takes up too much on computer etc. A lot was above my head but the details he went into gave the concept that-s it-s not good nor is any VPN especially free ones! I can-t afford yours rn or id our Coase one of your routers. think I-ll download Linux to another partition On my windows as I hate my new Lenovo with 10 so bought a Dell for $50 woth 7 on it at a thrift store. will never buy another iphkne again as ow as hacked by one of their Engineers and they-re contracted Edith Amazon google and Microsoft for AI since 2019 and sharing everything! and there-s Linux On phones for sale as low as $69 online Everyone-s rooting and jailbreaking now. thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

its always about the user and his experience in using a system. for example you are common guy who downloads games, visit pirate sites, torrenting etc etc etc, then you should use a good anti virus like kaspersky which can help you to not get into unwanted troubles.
viruses are there, and windows defender is not going to do shit, for general public antivirus is a good option.
but if you are doing something complicated and don't want anything to snoop around then an isolated environment would be good, i mean a person who knows what he is doing, then its upto you to decide whether you should use antivirus or not.
for common people not using a good internet security is going to invite more troubles, malware, adware, secret crypto mining using your system and a lot.

I have gone nearly 100% 'cyber- commando' on my pc's as well for as long as I can remember (mid 2000's at least) I just always felt they did nothing but slow down your computer anyway, at least from a consumer point of view. If I ever got into an important (non-fast food or retail associate job lol) job I might but. your man in the middle reasoning may change my mind.
Anyway I'd always just done a malwarebytes free scan from time to time, and I'm thinking of getting a VPN (I'm sure yours is suggested) and THAT close to getting a password key (ubikey) just so I don't have to remember my passwords and it's not in the hands of someone else. Does this sound like a good plan, any suggestions?

At present I have 1 windows machine 2 Android tablets 1 android phone and three Linux machines. All three run mx-linux. Very good Linux distro for beginners and pro's. Base on Debian. My windows machine was on the net less than an hour before it got it's first virus. Only reason I installed windows on it was for the programming software. I couldn't get Linux to recognize the programming cable for my ham radios. So I stuck win 7 on a old Acer laptop. Guess I just need to leave it of the internet period. Just use it for my radios.

Though the threat of an Antivirus is clear, I do not necessarily apply this advice to an enterprise. Enterprise security has additional tools that can mitigate some risks of the Antivirus.
Enterprise priorities are completely different (your privacy is not a priority. Even kiddie viruses have a big impact financially on an enterprise. And of course ransomware would be the even bigger threat.
Enterprises block malware through other means (such as scanning email at the server side -- not at the client)

I don't understand all the computer jargon - I am not computer savvy. I just don't have the time to spend hours and days reading up on computers. I have Windows 10. So, if I understood you correctly, I should NOT use any antivirus but just use Windows Defender. Okay, fine. Should I use CCleaner or anything else or what? Many thanks.

Complete nonsense! Should we stop using locks on doors because some people can pick those locks? No. AVs can stop zero day attacks with behavioral analysis. Without some trusted modern AV you can never know if software has compromised your system. People like you are the reason ransomware is causing some much problems.

I run my computers the same way you do Rob. No AV, except, as you said, the free one on Win10.
My Linux and Android items, no AV either. Of course, people need some common sense too.

I think John McAfee was talking about his own software as it has consistently been rated as one of the worst AV's out there along with Norton. Although I agree. If you're on Windows, Defender on its own is pretty good now - if you're ok with telemetry.
