I typically use an official Sony DualShock 2 from the PS2 for PSX and PSP emulation, super cheap USB NES and SNES clone controllers for all Nintendo emulation (SNES controller makes a great DS controller), and my Xbox One controller for Steam games.
The Xbox One controller has been supported natively in the kernel for 3 years now over USB, which I prefer, because I don-t have to resync it with my Xbox when I-m done on the PC; just unplug it from the pc and turn it on to start the Xbox. -
I did, however, just order a secondhand PS3 controller to use wirelessly for my PSX/P emulation, though. I-ll see what that-s like when it arrives. If there-s no crazy noticeable latency, I can see me using it for Steam in the future, too.

xbox one controller is a good option, you need to make sure you have the later version with bluetooth, the controllers that came out when the xbox one s was released, its simple to setup via bluetooth, i was never able to get the old version to connect using that microsoft dongle, my guess is there was never a driver released for it, all i had to do was google -xbox one controller bluetooth linux- and i was able to find many tutorials on how to connect it, pretty simple

It has been a year since this post. My son and I are are playing some multi player Linux games and we hate using the keyboard so we are looking for alternatives and of course you have covered this subject. I refuse to use ms products. My son has a Nintendo Switch so I am curious if the Pro Controller has matured enough to work wirelessly with Linux, or should we stick with the PS4 or hunt down a Rumble Pad?

Oh man, seeing the Logitech Rumblepad takes me back. I have one myself, and it was mostly good, but my biggest gripe with it was the area around the analogue sticks being square-shaped. One of the dumbest design decisions I've seen on any controller; I often wound up pushing the sticks toward a corner without meaning to.
Nowadays though, very happy using my Switch Pro controller

Thanks for this video! I really want a ps4 controller for my gaming desktop, I've just been checking multiple sources before I pull the trigger because I wanted to make sure it's Linux-friendly. This seals the deal for me. I can also see why you love your Steam controller, though I think I prefer a smaller form factor for my hands.

Hey Chris, I have a PS4 controller and I'm playing RE2 (remastered version) through Lutris, and I can connect the controller but when I'm firing the weapon it has some issues, it doesn't work very well. Do you have some tips to make this controller working? (For my Linux games in Linux steam works fine)

I just want my xbox one wired controller headphone jack to work. On windows i just hook up my controller up and connect the headset to the headphone jack and bamm it worked! AUDIO! But on linux i need to connect the headset directly to the computer, just adding more wires all over the place.

Does anyone know if these controllers can be used just like a mouse to control the cursor using any other app? (Yes I know I can just get an ergonomic mouse, but if the answer is -yes- then one device for multi purposes is the way to go -)

Sadly, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has proven to be kinda the worst controller i've been using on Linux.
It frequently -disconnects-, even while using a wired (USB) connection... which is weird - but it makes it unbearable for any serious gameplay....

On manjaro kde, i somehow cannot use my switch controller at all. Or if it got picked up, some Buttons were not mapped..
Wireless or with cable, no avail, didnt work for me.
I would love to use it, but i dont know how to. Can anyone help me there?
