An i5 is not always -almost- an i7. the Sandy Bridge i5-2520M has 3 megs of L3 and 2 cores that hyperthrash to appear like 4 cores by making the cpu fan whine most of the time. That i5 also declocks my DDR3-1600 to 1333. Simply dropping in an i7-2860QM gave me 8 megs of L3 spread around 4 real cores, and now my DDR3-1600 runs full-speed. Intel admits to a hyperthreading security vulnerability so I turned HT off. I also turned Turbo off, so now I hardly ever hear the fan or feel the warmth but things still start faster with the extra cores and extra L3.

I have a Helios 300 with 5 9300H Quad Core and a 1660ti. I thought I got a 120hz screen on it as well, but found out it only supports 60hz. I bought a 120hz screen to replace the old, only to find out later that my laptop don't use my GPU but my CPU for rendering screen. And I read about it: 5 9300H Quad Core dose not support 120hz. Luckily for me I had a 120hz monitor I could connect and got the most out of my laptop with 2k res gaming at 120hz. But sucks that I have to carry the monitor with me if I'm traveling if I want that experience.

I see a difference. and it-s more noticeable as the years pass by. an i7 just won-t die, I have OLD LAPTOPS with 2nd-4th gen i7s that my workplace-s IT department gave to me for free, and it actually FEELS LIKE A modern midrange machine even though it-s 9 YEARS OLD. the 2nd-3rd gen i5 does feels a bid sluggish as time passes by but these older i7s still do well even today.

Thank you for this! I'm upgrading and made a lot of poor choices back in 2013 when I bought my last laptop and this has been EXACTLY what I needed to know. It looks like the extra $300 isn't worth it in a 13'' computer that I won't be using for more than some basic video editing and some simple game playing. Finally someone who explains it in terms I can understand!

I have a Sony Duo Ultrabook from 2013 with I5 4200u. It's still fast enough in 2020 for everyday works. The I7 model was $400 more expensive and maybe a little faster. For video editing, I think you need a desktop or go for those crazy desktop replacement laptops like MSI Titan with 64gb ram or Alienware.

reply

Just to be safe since i'm so confused now. Is there anything the I5 has over the I7? With everything he has mentioned being identical i just hear people saying I5 is better for overal multi purpose usage and I7 better for heavy stuff. I'm confused.

I-ll go with an i5, but add another 8gb single rank 2666Mhz ram to get 16. It comes default 512ssd which should be enough as I don-t download games. Would you support this decision or think otherwise? Help me out.
