Ever wanted to match the skin tone in your image to any other skin from any other image or even the same image? In this episode of skin retouching in Photoshop we are going to learn how to use the traditional curves adjustment layer to automatically and accurately match skin tone of your subject to any other reference image or the same image. At times, you might not prefer the skin tones in your images. Whether you want to whiten skin in photoshop or darken it, or maybe you find the skin to be too red or too yellow. At this point, instead of adjusting skin tone with the curves, you can easily pick an image, either from the web or your own image library that has the desirable skin tone and match your subject's skin to it using this accurate and simple method. This will make fixing skin tones much easier, convenient and accurate. Due to lighting or makeup, sometimes the skin color on the face becomes different from the body. In those situations too, you can easily use this technique to even out skin tone in Photoshop. In this skin tone tutorial, you will also learn how to change skin color in Photoshop. You might want to edit skin in order to color it differently. In that case, all you need to do is to pick a reference image with a subject of the skin color of your choice and you're good to go. This video dives deep into the usage of curves in Photoshop

I've watched this video about 14 times now from front to back and I went through every single process. Each time something weird happens for instance sometimes I can't get the layers to reselect. Other times I get the whole image to come out the way that I wanted but that little circle with the crosshairs even though I uncheck the layers of the average colors that circle with a cross hairs is still on my image. And I can uncheck every layer and it's still stuck to my transparent page! I don't know maybe I'll try this again tomorrow. Because it's been hours and each time I do it something bad happens. For instance when I was putting in the new color values for RGB I put one wrong number and I had backspace and it made my whole curves level adjustment layer just vanish. Then on top of that when I have my curves adjustment panel open the information page that you have on yours isn't listed on mine. Initially I was using essential oils but then I switch to photography so we would be on the same Photoshop page itself. And I still cannot get just the info and curves adjustment to pop up at the same time. It was either one or the other. So I wrote my values down and like I said from that moment when I put in one wrong number I had backspace even though the numbers were highlighted and it erased everything. This if anything taught me that photoshop is and will always be a pain in the ass. I just hope one day that luminar comes up with a software where you just push a button because this is equivalent to something like a sky Swap. And is tedious and as big as a pain in the butt they are it's so much easier to just push a button.

i have problem. I am using LAB and curves to do some color matching with images and have run into a strange problem. It should be noted that I have been working on a ton of images over the last few days using the same method and haven't had this problem before. This is the first time I have tried to do this since updating Photoshop this morning. I'm also using the most recent version.
I make my selection that I wish to alter and create a curves adjustment layer. Shift+Ctrl click on the second color selection. With that color point selected in the curves dialogue box, I click on output to change the number but the box disappears. I then click that point again to select it, the box appears again, and when I click the box to type in a number the box disappears again.
I have already restarted my computer, reset the preferences, tried another file, and cursed.
I'd greatly appreciate some help or ideas. Thanks!

I am running the latest version of CC 2018. I tried entering specific input and output values into a Curves adjustment layer. The input box allowed entry. Everything goes blank as soon as I click on the output box. If I use the actual Curves function (Image > Adjustments > Curves) I can input both values. I tried doing the reset by shutting down Photoshop, pulling the CC 2018 settings file out onto the desktop, then restarting Photoshop. While it reset most things, it did not change the behavior in a Curves adjustment layer. I still could not enter an output value.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

Hi Unmesh, first off I want to thank you for your tutorials, they've helped me a lot on my photoshop skills. I followed the steps as per this tutorial however I've run into 2 problems. Firstly when I move strip 2 above the curves adjustment layer the colours don't match, secondly when I turn on the preview of my of my model I noticed that only a selection of the skin has changed but not the whole image. I'm not sure what I have done wrong but it would be a great help if you could help me solve my issues. Thanks again!

Hi Unmesh, I have a problem when I am making the sample of the skin tone. I used the square rectangle tool to take a sample & made it into a separate layer as instructed. But when I go to Filter >> Blur >> Average, the sample changes into white. Complete white. I've tried it on a few different photos & the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong? I'm using Photoshop CC2018 on Win 8. 1 (I know! It's what I have though)

I know this is an older video, but I just found it for myself. Awesome tutorial. I always hated it when I would take multiple photos of the same person, like my wife, and for various reasons her skin would look a little too different for my taste in the photos. Now Ill have a way to match her skin more closely. I feel that will help to give my photos a more cohesive look.

You are so freakin awesome. I just tried this. It was so easy. I had two photographs one was black and white, the other in color. I colorized the b&w photo with some free tool and then used your tutorial here to fix the skin tones to match using the other photo. So amazing.

Great tutorials, but damn, I feel bad for how much you hate your dark skin. every video I've seen of this tutorial, you're always lightening their skin, never seen one where you show several examples and you go both ways.

Hey in one of your video you show the method of use of gradient maps and changing the blend mode to hue or color plus curves to match the skin tone. so which one is best? This or that

why do you need to take an average of the image that will be changed? can't you just pick the original strip then apply the results to the second image, not its average strip?

Hi, I have a problem. when I change the output, this massage appears: an integer between 0 to 100 is required and not allowing me to change to higher number. what should i do?
