we will also learn how you can apply this same trick to other Adobe programs like Illustrator! Joe: Great info! Very useful. I wonder though, is there anyway to integrate that into photoshop so that when you click the 'Create New' button the psdt file will show up as one of the presets in the dialog? If there is, I would love to know how to install a psdt file as a preset! Been searching online and can find no information on how to do this. All I can find on adobe's help is how to download a template from adobe stock. Those install into photoshop and are listed in the Create New dialog, but I don't want anything from adobe stock. I need to know how to create my own and install it in photoshop. I hope you can help! Your videos have taught me so much, such a valuable resource!

Hi Unmesh, are you sure it's necessary to rename a PSDT into PSD in order to modify it? I know that for Word and Excel templates (DOTX, XLTX) it's possible to edit the template rather than to create a new file simply by right-clicking onto the file and selecting Open instead of New. It would be surprising to me if Adobe wasn't in position to implement the same type of file handler in the Explorer's context menu.

I just make different changes or versions (color, fonts, images, etc) in different layers in the same file. I just turn off the layers I don't want when I download a different version. If I want a different background color, I turn off the current BG layer and turn on a different colored layer. But this is good to know as well. learned something new today. Thank you, love your tutorials!

And then there's the method that was always there and that works for any software.
Right click the file, set it to be write protected, and when you then try to save the file, it will ask you to rename it.
Some programs will even warn you upon opening, that the file is write protected.
You can still make any edits, you just can't save the file, without changing the file name.

Thanks very much for this. Question: - could you possibly make a video about how to work withcustomize a file like this in PS and then open into a PremierePro video? I have licensed a PSDT bundle but am not sure how to edit it (smart objects etc, and do I just turn off the layers of all the other options available on the bundle (that I do not wish to use. Thanks if you can answer me.

Unmesh brother can you help i have noticed that whenever i created a group of bunch of layers and merge all the layers or convert that group into a smart object. so that's previous effect is reduced. I edited a image of playing holi and add some texture to it and when i merged all the layers the previous effect has gone.

I did it on my CS6 & my project was just converted into an unopened type file. Thank god I made a duplicate of that project. After opening it, it shows could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with this. When I make the change to the file name and then open it, it opens with my file name and then psdt. psd (so not as a template, just as a standard psd file. Any ideas?
Thanks!

hello i tried to change background by quick selection and refine edge but something changed. now background is getting removed but still in png a color appears in background. how to make it transparent. please help
reply

01: 40 - Basic mistake. Whenever you want to change a document (ANY document) and save it as a new one, start with saving it first, just after opening it, before making ANY changes. Make it a Habit.

Great video Unmesh! I'd also like to mention that there's an even easier way to show file extensions in Windows 8 and up, just go to View tab, Show/hide ribbon and check File name extensions
reply

Brilliant and simple. I work in a job where I make Photoshop templates for others all the time. Never knew about this trick! Thanks so much for this video!
reply

You should include the instructions for showing extensions on the Mac (Finder Menu>Preferences>Check the box in front of Show all filename extensions)
reply

by changing the extension in psdt, it doesnt do anything. Insted i have a file with psdt. psd renamed
what is wrong with my changes?
