Hate Cropping? 3 Ways to Expand Photos in Photoshop! XylenRoberts: I remember when simply pressing Command T on your MAc would allow you to resize an image without cropping naturally. Then Adobe changed the command to resize it cropping style and made the methods of non-cropping resizing a pain the rear end! Leave it to Adobe to take something that used to be so simple and make it needless complicated.

This is great. I easily extended one side of an image by creating layers as described, but when I when I tried to extend the other side, I continually got an error message could not make a new layer from the selection because the selected layer is empty
I have not been able to find a work-around. Any advice? Thanks

reply

the extension worked out quite well but with all that added blur and vignette you just completely changed the look of the photo. I know that this is kind of your style but the image was perfect in its simplicity and in my opinion you destroyed this innocent feeling approach of the original photograph.

Why nothing works in my photoshop? I am using Photoshop CC 14.
I can't unlock the background by clicking on the lock. No response.
Properties don't show for an image!
Content aware scale is disabled by default. I have to rasterize a layer to be able to use it.

Had no idea Content Aware Scale was a thing!
Can't believe how many times I've needed to mirror a background from a product shoot I always end up using the patch tool or healing brush to fix up gradients created from lights.

reply

Great stuff! For the mirror method, I would duplicate a much larger area once to fill the empty space. Then use the healing brush to get rid of unwanted objects. But every photo is different and calls for different approaches.

I'm an indie author, and I make my own book covers from stock images. I'm always having to manipulate them, cropping, filling, etc, and I'm so NOT an artist. These techniques are going to get used all the time. Thank you.

You are master of this all. Great. BUT, its always better to take pictures keeping in mind where to use. SIMPLE! INVEST some time before hand thinkin about composition, SAVE loads of time post BS thing!

Definitely very informative and educational. You start with very easy way and then gets complicated and I loose attention! Well, I have to get used to the style I guess. Keep educating the world.
