If you wanted to know all about Shannon Sharpe’s workout and diet, especially to look the way he does at 55 years old, then you’ve come to the right place. In this video, I am going to break down what Shannon Sharpe’s workouts and nutrition looks like to maintain his incredible physique. Just like I’ve done for every celebrity workout critique that I have done in the past, I am going to remain respectful and provide an unbiased review of Shannon Sharpe’s workouts. Not only that, but I am going to explain how important it is to implement some of his principles into your training and nutrition so that you can see success as well. To preface this video, I don’t have access to Shannon’s entire workout program and diet, but we do have a some insights based on interviews he’s done and information he has shared on his podcast and his instagram page. Thus, I don’t have complete context into every single thing he does today, but I can review the information that is available to me. To start, it would come as no surprise that people have accused Shannon Sharpe of taking PEDs in order to achieve the body that he has at his age. However, he claims a natural status going back to his playing days and based on the information in the rest of the video, I can also assume that he is not taking anything. He states that he’s always been subjected to people thinking he was taking PEDs as even when he was playing in the NFL. Without the use of performance enhancing drugs, Shannon Sharpe's body is the result of the hard he puts in during his workouts and his dedicated approach to his diet as well. Beginning with his workouts, Shannon Sharpe states that he does not focus on lifting as heavy as possible anymore and instead has moved much of his focus to circuit training to supplement his traditional weight training. As a matter of fact, he splits his days into two workouts with the morning session being a traditional strength and bodybuilding workout while his cross-training is reserved for the evening. With these cross-training circuits, he calls likens them to CrossFit. While I am not the biggest fan of CrossFit programming, I can understand that he Shannon Sharpe's workouts are calling for him to continuously move his body to improve his conditioning and supplement the caloric burn necessary to maintain his level of leanness. While these workouts are not hypertrophy based, that doesn't mean he doesn't put time and effort into building muscle as well. Sharpe's traditional workouts consist of exercises that are hypertrophy based with the goal of building muscle. While I have no real complaints about the way he performs his exercises, I can point out a few things worth noting. First, I notice that he focuses on holding the contracted position of every exercise; while some might argue that this goes against recent research stating that the most important part of the range of motion is the stretch, that doesn't mean the contraction is worth throwing out. I would, however, recommend that he focus a little bit more on the eccentric portion of the lifts. He seems to rush through this part of the lift and I think that Shannon Sharpe's physique, while impressive, could benefit from a little more focus in this area. One thing worth noting for Shannon Sharpe's injury history that influences some of his workouts, is his recent dual hip replacement. Shannon Sharpe's diet and approach to nutrition is not very dissimilar from my own. He mentions that he eats roughly the same things with slight variations on a daily basis. This is key to staying consistent with his nutrition as he knows what foods to eat day-in and day-out in order to maintain his body fat levels. Shannon Sharpe's body fat is low because of this consistent approach and lack of deviation from what works. When it comes to how lean Shannon Sharpe is, this comes down to not just what he eats, but how much he eats. He has remained so dialed-in with his diet that he knows exactly how much to eat every single day - this means that he is not in fear of overeating. Not only that, but he is of the mindset, that I agree with, that his eating habits are not part of a diet (as that is temporary) but instead part of a lifestyle. Overall, I like Shannon Sharpe's training and nutrition. It checks many of the boxes helping him to achieve the body that caused you to look him up in the first place. Shannon's comment about the locker room and the shared experience wasn't about enjoying the process or the grind per se. It was about going through it with other people. Jeff himself mentioned the camaraderie he felt as a trainer (23: 59) for the Mets as a key factor in his being successful and enjoying the process while it was happening and not, as in this video, as somebody looking back philosophically years later.
Get yourself a workout buddy, a workout coach, or start mentoring somebody in the gym. It will make the process SO much more rewarding and easier to be consistent with. The sum is greater than the parts when you work out with somebody who shares your goals.
Shannon helped the Broncos win their first Super Bowl when I was 13 and living two hours from Denver. He was one of my sports gods. His biceps seemed unreal but were very motivating for an 8th grader just discovering the weight room. Thanks for this video, Jeff.

Gym streets over 30 yrs, I started out Track-n-Field, discovered Bodybuilding w. Miltary Buddy that compete, left Miltary studied Ironman, Muscle Fitness & Men's Health Magazines. I was lifting so intense dudes thought was competing, so challenged myself to get on stage NPC. I placed Top 3 in 4 shows. Lost drive for stage when guy clearly on PE took 1st vs myself being all natural.
Fast forward, I would say in a year take approximately 1-2 months total days off ever. Dedication to the Fitness Lifestyle plus evolving workouts into Jeff's Recommendations plus mixing up Sprint Intervals, Walking Inclines & Stair Master.
Bottomline: If you had bad habits or abused your body w. poor nutrition, then possible to reverse some but not all. Turning it all around is the best thing can do to enjoy better quality aging. Still going w. 6 pack turning the corner of 55 in 2025.

I am 56 years old. I am one of those guys. I get the look at the gym a lot. Some guys even asked me. I tell them that I only use supplementation. Which is the truth. Vitamins, Whole Foods and a little discipline. Of course I use protein shakes. And he's right. Not everyone has the same genetic cards dealt to them. I'm nowhere near as strong as some guys in the gym but I look it. I'm pretty jacked up. I know that I Inspire some of these young guys in the gym. That is worth almost as much to me as getting in shape myself. I love being the old dog in the kennel. Everything I take you can get at vitamin shoppe.

Don’t know why people care so much. Whether it’s true or not only matters if you care. Either way, no one should look at him and think that’s realistic for the average person. Either he is on something or he has too 0. 0001% genetics paired with a lifestyle and work either that 0. 0001% of the population has, making it next to impossible for another person to match his physique. Focus on yourself and do the best you can, making progress each time working closer toward your goal (which should be to push yourself hard, and reaching for that next profession.

I knew a dark skinned black guy at 55 years old who was previously a boxer and sprint athlete in highschool amd college and just never worked out again. He was a big bulbous fellow with a big gut and a bit rambunctious for his age. I but when I grabbed his cartoonishly massive forearm, I truly appreciated the term man of steel. No perceptible fat on him except a layer of skin to remind me he was human. He could still beat small town high school track stars in sprint race without hardly a warm up. The guy was unreal.

Shannon is a genetic freak- always has been, likely always will be. Enhanced Who knows or cares. It's his body and at 55, he still looks fantastic. I can respect the guy for his football accomplishments, his physique, etc. even tho I don't care for his personality or style. The man looks great, period. Good for him. No one can accomplish that without a lot of hard work, consistency and discipline. If he needs a little boost, that's between him and his doctor.

Superior genetics exist. People think they don’t, but they absolutely do and they make a huge difference for those they have them. Not saying he doesn’t work hard. But others work just as hard and don’t even come close. Though, nfl like Hollywood, likes those thing to be kept in the down low. They would spank him if he admitted if on it. And possibly he took it when he was young and he’s living off of muscle memory.

Those seated shoulder presses, I have found that if I do a shoulder press movement, then i Have to have some form of bend going back. Going straight up just messes up my shoulders so much. So perhaps Sharpe is in that spot with his shoulders. I mean considering I am sure his shoulders have been put through it over the years between workouts and getting hit on the field.

Some of the most sound nutrition advice. Be prepared. Lifestyle over dieting. Sustainability and consistency are key. Choosing high quality foods goes a long way to helping you manage the quantity. One thing I would add is treat meals over cheat meals. You’d be surprised how many treat foods you can fit into your maintenance budget just fine without cheating.

PEDs infest sport and recreation like a cancer
He's natty He's juicing! - all of it is performative
Many were quick to change their tune when the truth about Lance Armstrong came out, and there is a long list of similar for/against with many other athletes and celebrities
If money and fame is involved, people will cheat

I’ll just say this and you can fact check it. I dunno if he’s taken gear but I use to workout with his cousin in Texas where Shannon would come to workout in the offseason. His cousin Robert Washington a former pro bodybuilder who sold gear. I worked out with Robert everyday for two years! So there’s that!

Great breakdown this one of the best and really puts peoples hard work into perspective. The comment around when people see what they haven't got. absolutely spot on. people just want what they don't have and if they can't get it the jealousy side just comes straight to the top. great video. Love these.

I really like Jeff's approach to this format. He does the critique and the analysis but he also brings the recognition that people are dealing with different limitations and injuries and explains that there's good reasons oftentimes for doing movements that others might say are less than optimal

My grandfather trained like this into his 60's and died of a heart attack when he was 78, autopsy was an enlarged thickened/hardened heart from over exercising! He may look good but I wonder how long he will live

athlean-x being as buff as you were, if you were using to get that big as their physical trainer, it seems there is a risk you'd recommend it to your athletes, I'd guess that would be why you were tested

Being that disciplined also keeps you looking young. Processed foods and sitting in front of the TV are the biggest factors in aging well. Genetics helps too of course, but you have no control of that.
