Elbow Pain with Pullups (QUICK FIX)

X joint recovery formula Elbow pain is extremely common when doing pullups. If you feel a burning or sharp pain on the inside of your elbow when you do a pull up, you could be suffering from medial epicondylitis or golfer-s elbow. This doesn-t have to prevent you from doing this king of all back exercises forever though if you work on fixing the problem (both short term and long term) with the tips shown in this video. The first thing you need to do is understand why you get pain in your inner elbow when doing pullups. When the reps get tough, we have a tendency to try and cheat our way up to the bar using all sorts of compensations. In order to feel as if we are getting our chin closer to the bar we reach with our head and more significantly, pull with our forearms. This tends to over activate the flexor and pronator muscles of our wrists. Even our fingers kick in and work too much as the flexors in our hands work to try and help out the lats to get your body up to the bar. In order to diminish the contribution of these extra muscles that simply aren-t equipped for the job of pulling you up to the bar as the lats are, you-re doing to want to consciously avoid making these compensations. The easiest way to do this is by switching to a neutral grip pullup, however this is not the ideal way. A pull up done this way works more of the inner back muscles than it does the lats since you are changing the plane of motion that the exercise is being performed in. If you want to maximize the benefits of the pull up for your back you are going to want to perform it in the frontal plane, with your elbows out to your sides (not in front of your body. That said, you want to be sure to initiate the move by packing the shoulders down and using the available movement in your shoulder blades. This will not only get you moving but also stabilize your shoulder girdle for the remainder of the move and eliminate the need for the elbows and wrists to contribute or cheat. If you are already dealing with elbow pain when doing pullups, you can diminish it by doing what I show you in this video. Hang a resistance band over a pull up bar (the athlean x-treme band is the one I-m using) and overlap the two ends to create extra thickness on the band. Now, wrap your pinky, ring and middle finger over the band and grasp the bar with just your index finger and thumb. This acts to diminish the activation of the flexor digitorum profundis muscle which can easily get inflamed and bother your elbow (with it-s attachment at the medial epicondyle. You should immediately feel some easing up or a complete release of the pain you have at your inner elbow. With your ability to do this pain free you can now keep doing the pullup without having to avoid it all together, while still being able to modify your form to prevent this from coming back again. To prevent elbow pain and other joint pain from getting in the way of your results and workouts, you will want to

Hey Jeff, I've been watching a lot of your videos and more recently pertaining to elbow pain and want to get your knowledge and expertise on what I've been experiencing because I'm now facing some difficult choices. If I do close hand pull ups I'm relatively fine, it's when I go into a wide grip overhand pull up, my left elbow/bicep/forearm just seems to cut out and I can't get halfway even because of pain/sensation like my elbow is going to blowout. I also experience elbow/bicep/forearm/wrist pain when making a fist and just flexing the bicep. Oddly enough something that seems related but you could tell yes or no or maybe, that I also have been experiencing neck/ shoulder/ upper as well as mid back issues. I had been in a car accident back in Aug. 2018 that resulted in two herniated discs. specifically (C5-C6 Central herniation with impression on the thecal sac, C6-C7 central herniation effacing ventral CS narrowing within left neural foramina) With straightening of the normal lordosis. When this all happened my neck/back/shoulder/and even the pec minor we're being affected. I would have spasms/numbness/and chronic pain. Having worked with a chiro/physical therapist/massage therapist for the past year while I've made some improvement, I'm able to turn my head a little easier but still have limited range and dealing with pain. I was told my options are surgery, direct injections into my neck for the rest of my life, or pharmaceuticals. I'm not a fan of any of those options and have reached a point where I really don't know what to do. If you could recommend anything that might get me out of this I would be forever in your debt. -Jon

When I do pull ups I get a discomforting feeling in my left arm bicep area. It feels like a tendon is rubbing against something every time at the start of a pull up and also When I come back down and finish the pull up. No matter how much I try to engage my shoulders that discomforting feeling is always there. I-ve tried stretches and so far nothing works. I take turmeric curcumin which is supposed to help with body discomfort and I believe that it has taken away the pain, but I still feel the tendon rubbing against something and it-s still just not comfortable and makes me question on whether I-m causing long term damage. i can do about 15 pull ups and at the end I won-t feel pain or discomfort. It-s only when I do the pull up that my arm doesn-t feel right.
No other work out causes this.
I-d be grateful for literally any type of advice. I-m going into the Marine Corps and don-t want to injure myself

What it the pain is more in the center of the elbow and is due to one arm pulling but only shows pain in one arm. I-ll do one arm pulling for both arms, my right is dominant but each arm gets equal time under tension, and it-s my right arm that has this elbow pain. I can do weighted (+50%) pull ups with no pain. Only one arm focused pulling (even rope climbs and 90 dog lock outs) is painful. Trouble is it doesn-t show up right away. It takes a certain amount of volume, but when it does show I-m out of commission for any bent arm exercise for at least 2 weeks. TIA

Hey Jeff, I just got around to watching this because I am 55 and began working out about 5 months ago. I was doing 6 reps of 10 pull ups and dips. I noticed now because of the pain I am lucky if I can do 2 reps. The thing is I don-t do all of that cheating I actually do perfect pull-ups. Anyhow I am going to start using your method will it ever go away or is it an injury for life I forgot to mention when I do the dips it doesn-t hurt why is that am I not using the elbow in that movement. Thanks

%100 its my ring finger that is effected and I feel it all the way down my forearm. Thank you for this helpful tip I'm going to try to incorporate your technique this week. I'm also using wrist straps. Like you would use for dead lifting with all of my pull exercises. I took 5 months off cold turkey. I couldn't wait any longer lol I have been able to go heavyish on push so far and stay light on pull.

I just started really having this issue! I started researching stuff online and of course most of the internet talks about having to go through surgery or some kind of 7 month rehabilitation for this pain. I did this little trick earlier and it works! No more pain in that elbow. Thank you very much for these videos! You've given me workouts and tips that have changed my life

Did this today because my bicep and front delt hurt for weeks. You can place anything under the hand of the arm that hurts just under the last 3 fingers so they are slightly elevated (You can fold your workout glove in half under those fingers with the non slip grip on the bar obviously) But it ABSOLUTELY WORKS! Ty Jeff.

I will have to try this and so glad I saw it. I thought that I got the elbow pain from doing pull ups but with my hands too close together. I actually didn't really know how to do a pull up or I mean where to place my hands. I was using a bar for neutral pull ups and was placing my hands inside so maybe a foot apart or less.
