Well-developed, rounded shoulders are one of many key features that dramatically improves and completes a powerful looking upper body. And in order to best grow this muscle and to answer the often asked question of how to get bigger shoulders, theres no doubt that the standing overhead press should be a staple in your routine. However, despite the seemingly straightforward movement pattern of the barbell overhead press (also known as the shoulder press or military press, theres a lot more that goes into it than simply lifting a bar overhead. In fact, proper overhead press form and shoulder press form in general is whats going to enable you to get big shoulders most efficiently while minimizing your risk of injury as you do so. Therefore, in this video Ill go through how to shoulder press properly by discussing the 5 most common overhead pressing technique mistakes people make. It's interesting that one of the research papers you cited claims that back-arching 'significantly reduces' pressing force. This seems to be contradicted by the evolution of the Olympic clean-and-press into a 'layback' movement with significant back-arching to employ more body-muscles and amplify strength (effectively making it a standing bench-press. It certainly isn't healthy for your spine, but to say that it weakens performance seems a bit misleading when it was a famous 'cheat move'.

Nice. The only thing I was wondering about is the starting position of the elbows. I've been told to have them up, so your upper arm is more or less parallel to the floor. Now, watching this, I guess that takes away some of the difficulty because it shortens the movement path? Or maybe not, because up until this point there is no stress on the shoulders anyway? Are the any clear pros and cons for either of the two variants?

Would wearing a belt while doing this exercise be beneficial when it comes to arching your lower back? I haven't done this for a long time, but when I did I would always arch my lower back and it would end up hurting usually on the right side.

Why should i use a barbell and not dumbbells to do a shoulder press? When doing chest presses for example, the dumbbells have a better range of motion and put less load on the rotator cuff muscles. Right?

Not applying correct form is like trying to drive a car with handbrake on. Sure you still will gain muscle mass, but the correct form guy will achieve the same gains with lesser weights and effort.

This video is great, I was really struggling to find a comfortable way to do this lift and hurt my back last time I did it, but this video pointed out a couple of things I was doing wrong.

Holy shit the first mistake made my back a lot better, I knew I was doing something wrong because something from my back was moving along with the shoulders, thanks this means a lot

This is what I call an ultra-researched, absolutely educational and fully informative video. You literally covered everything that could be covered about OHP. Good job.

Can you do a video on a seated overhead press? I use the Inspire machine and would like to check my form when doing this exercise while seated on the bench. Thanks!
