Should you quit swimming? Asking the right question - Skills N' Talents

Swimmers often write to me asking if they should quit swimming. They dont enjoy swimming as much as they used to or they have stoped improving which makes them hate swimming. I would like to tell you a story about the greatest breaststroker of our time, Adam Peaty. In an interview he said that one sunday evening at the age of 14 he realized he wanted to quit swimming, he didnt think he could handle the two sessions a day. His mom told him to go for one more week and if at the end he didnt like it he could stop swimming. The next week his mom told him the same thing. I guess that this continued for a couple of weeks until he realized that some days swimming is not fun. however, there are days that make it all worth it. Sometime we look too far into the future and feel like getting to our goal is impossible. I have said to myself in the past How can I be that fast if I cant even beat my best time from last year. I was asking the wrong question. I then asked myself what is stopping me from being that fast. Then I found what is truly holding me back. Most of the time the main issue is going to practice with a bad attitude. when i went to practice with a bad attitude, I would get frustrated with any mistake and things get dark. Swimming with a bad attitude is like having foggy goggles. Your vision gets blurry, you dont understand things correctly and you start doing things wrong. You cant always go to practice feeling joyful but you can prepare mentally on the way to the pool how you are going to react to the pain, the annoying swim-mate, or the coach yelling at you. You can say to yourself that today you will get faster, even if it is a little bit. You will improve your technique, you will work on one weakness of yours, or simply that you will do one more underwater kick after that last wall of the 100 meters fast pace. That is enough. If you focus on improving one small thing each practice you will feel proud. Most of the time swimming is painful and difficult, but if you find joy in the little things and celebrate the small victories, every practice can be worth it. Remember, prepare yourself mentally for practice and find small things to keep improving. I hope you find this video helpful, if you did, leave a comment below. march-17 I can't swim. at all. but I need the practice because of my hnp.
then I started doing flutter kick with holding my breath. 1 session per week.
the next month I bought a center snorkel. doing the same for longer distance.
all the while still fear of drowning and struggle for breathing coordination.
last month I started to step into deeper part of the pool, and started to do the catch & pull. I started to do my daily morning sessions.
the next week I'm starting to understand 2 kick freestyle
the next week I'm starting to do open turn and shortened my daily 500 from 1 hour last month, to 26 minutes.
this week I feel sharp pain on my shoulders. rest for a day & took analgesics.
Continued for a slow session this morning to keep the spirit, for all the small bits of progress I can get, and appreciate what swimming do to my low back pain problem.
Nothing short of miraculous.

Well, when it is time to head to the pool, I get all twitchy, in a good way, because the body knows it is time to amp up. Not sure that I have seen it anywhere, but the question of 'over training' does come up. I know it is highly dependent on the individual, but one guy at my pool says I am way over training. I am 68 and swim 4500 to 5000 yards 5 days a week. No major aches and pains, other than 'oh, I can tell I haven't done that in a while. ' I have lost 10 pounds in the last 3 months, and taken off more than 5 seconds off of my 50 yard over arm side stroke sprints. 30+ more pounds to go and want my 50 yard sprint timed down another 10 seconds. I don't feel like I am over extending my limits. but am increasing my effort/swimming faster rather than adding more laps, at least for now.

I dont have good team mates but I do have a lovely coach. My swim team isnt really the best and honestly Im the worst in it but I try hard. I had to stop for a while for exams and before hand wasnt swimming 5 day a week more like 3/4 because of study and then I wanted a week or two off because my exams where over after 2 weeks and I was exhausted and didnt want to do early mornings. Its been 6 weeks now and Im going away for 2 so I will be 8 weeks aka 2 whole months. Before this brake I didnt want to give up but now I do. My goal is not to complete but say fit and swim 5 days a week it always has been but idk anymore is it to late to go back? its gonna be hard ik. idk what to do?

hey, I'm currently swimming and have been swimming since at a very young age, I love swimming but I feel like I'm can't do it anymore, I feel fast but I feel nervous when the older and more faster people see the slower people swimming (which is me) if I had a choice to pick swimming over something else it would be track/crosscountry I won many 1st places in running but of I were to do running there would be no running classes and also I should have started taking track classes at a young age. should I do the sports (swimming) I was born to do or do the sports that I feel more confident (running)

This helps, I have been thinking about swimming for almost a year, everyone in my age category is faster than me and I rarely get medals. But when ever I go swimming I always finish in a good mood. It makes me happy. I enjoy my thoughts when we have those long sets. And a going to try my best to improve. I am black and butterfly is my strength. But my coach won't let me compete until I improve my times in the other 3(which I am significantly weak in. Also being the only black person in my sqaud meant, I never felt like I belonged. Thanks this helped alot. I will try harder until I improve the

I just made like a big mistake. Just because I felt like I couldn't improve more and was in pain all the time, I stopped with the serious swimming group and went back to the 'not so good' swimmers. It's not just that. I have senior year in highschool (going univercity, a job and swimming. It became to much.
Now that I've basically stopped, I miss it. Like a lot. Don't stop when you think you just can't handle it, you're probably gonna regret it later (at least in my experience) after all I could do it. Right now I have a lot of free time (time I could be swimming)

I just turned 17, and my winter training sucks. A couple practices I skipped because I couldnt be there but also a couple I missed because I was to tired, or in pain. I feel very badly because today was a tipping point for both my mother and I. I never thought I could go to Nationals or Zones and because of this I, as my dad would say, over cooked the goose thanks to you and your other videos theyve inspired me to not think to far ahead and to go into practice with a good mentality and improve one little thing each time at practice

My kids, aged 9, were swimming 3 hours a week at their swim club, but they made such good progress that the coach moved them to the next, more 'serious' squad, and they now spend 6 hours a week in the pool. They are finding the transition difficult, and they seem to be going through crises of confidence and don't feel motivated enough to want swim at the moment. Aside from offering heaps of support and encouragement, is there anything else I can do to help them?

I recently moved to another swimming club, and my times got significantly worse, I hate all the people, its so crowded. There was litterally 17 I repeat, FRICKING 17 swimmers in one lane! I was thinking of quitting for a few weeks, my toughts didnt change since then. And since my times got up like 10 seconds I really feel like there is no way back. I am in a very dark place. Should I actually quit?

I am turning 22 very soon, I am still in university, and I didn't start swimming until I was 17, I go train everyday but today when I finished, I realized I might never make it on the college team, nor will I ever achieve olympic times. This is what makes me want to quit. I just don't find a purpose anymore, if I was still young like at 12 years old, I would never consider quitting.

I am 54 years old. I have joined swimming coaching 20 days back. I have learnt dog paddling, but since last few days I develop severe throbbing headache as soon as I start swimming, in my first breadth itself. It lasts for half an hour or so. I had just started learning a bit, but the headache comes every day. Please help me out.

I'm thinking of retiring in a few more years & decided to take up swimming. Thank God for you tube as I got free swimming lessons. Although I can do one length & I feel like my lungs are going to explode. I feel like swimming is not for me & thinking of giving it up. Your video has changed my thinking. I will continue. Thank you.

Im thinking of quitting because i have just moved up to squad (a higher level) and older, faster people are there. They do 250m of freestyle and not get tired but if I do 100m freestyle I get tired. Im scared that im not good enough and I cant even do backstroke tumbleturn (flipturn) correctly.

Thanks for the video, I'm 14 years old and I was thinking to stop swimming. The cause of that was that I cannot beat my time of the last year. Then I go to one practice sick and I felt very frustrated. Now I see this video and motivates me.
