I am currently a 24-year-old female feminist, and I am more upset about the change to the auction scene than how it used to be. Taking out the Buy a Wench sign and changing it to Bridal Auctions or (whatever it was for a while) didn't bother me too much because I could understand that wench is a derogatory term for women. However, pirates used that word because they were in a time long before the feminist movement picked up the speed it needed to reach how the world is today; this was a time where women were below men in value (maybe even below animals in some regions. The fact that it makes women (and feminist men) upset today is because we have collectively learned that treating women as wenches is BAD. Pirates were BAD PEOPLE, which is why the buy a bride scene was one of the best parts of the ride. On a similar note, having a woman pirate who is unapologetically feminine and dresses with makeup, billowing curls, and a fancy dress goes against everything that was historically accurate about women pirates in this era. The major reason women were banned by crews from being aboard their vessels was because women were considered bad luck to the men. That's why women dressed up as men -- and, besides being bad luck charms, they did so to ensure they would not be raped or beaten by the men for simply being women. In the Dead Man's Chest film (2006, Elizabeth dressed as a cabin boy to join a crew and travel to Tortuga to find Jack. When the crew found her dress, they nearly found her out, which would have signed her death sentence had she not found a way to remain hidden. All in all, this new normalized auction scene upsets me so much more than how it used to be with the women in ropes. The entire point of that scene was to show people how wrong it was that these things happened -- just like how slavery was bad, how murdering people is bad, how burning down entire villages is bad, how stealing is bad, etc. The more people cover up how things were before, the more we doom ourselves to backtrack our progress and repeat what we fought to overcome.

I don't take issue with the fact that they replaced the old auction scene. Pirates had plunder auctions just as often as (if not more often than) slave sales. The problem I do have is that, while the old auction was a centerpiece in the otherwise rather repetitive second half of the ride, the new one just sort of mushes in. The new redhead (who is a brunette actually) has clunky dialogue and movements that are just about as good. The new scene tied so hard to be exciting that it became a low(ish) point of the ride. That all said, I really love the Davey Jones replacement. I always hated the fake waterfall and its very obvious curtains. The octopus is really fluid too (wish I could say the same about Redd the brunette) I do think that the old pirate's dialogue is a bit less ominous than it should be. I honestly don't know why they didn't go with the chicken auction but with the pirates yelling we wants the redhead. Then she could shoot at them and make the whole objectifying women point more pirate-ey. Oh well. The original ride sort of died when Jack came in, so any new change is just piled on top of that.

To everyone griping about the ride being politically correct: you DO realize that this is a family amusement park ride, right? And that the old scene portrayed literal human trafficking? I'm not trying to deny that trafficking ever happened during the era of pirates, but at the same time we need to be a little more careful at what we show our kids. Female pirates did actually exist at the time, too, so it's not like this is a historical inaccuracy for the sake of a feminine power fantasy. Trafficking's still a huge problem in modern society, claiming hundreds of innocent lives annually. While I wouldn't say the ride was really promoting it, I don't think it was quite right to use it for a quick laugh. And I'm not telling you to get over it. I've been a passholder for Disneyland for years, and I was fond of this ride and the old scene like many of you were. I just hope you realize that human trafficking really shouldn't have a place at a Disney theme park.

Disney, still promoting woman on men violence and now instead of the red dress lady we have a loud mouth with a gun. That totally ruined it as at least before it was a sincere reflection of history where women might have been auctioned off. No no men have guns until the end. Too bad Disney has fallen victim and got sucked in to the man hating theme instead of sticking to the imagination theme. Of course people have been complaining for years about the women chasing the men with a rolling pin and hay fork and of course water torture the dude in the well but still Disney insists on promoting woman against men violence So now we have PC where women are concerned and just who cares, some reality of the time and place violence towards the men. This borders on hypocrisy and is losing it's entertainment value. Sad

No fear have ye of evil curses, says you? Arrrgh. Properly warned ye be, says I. Who knows when that evil curse will strike the greedy beholders of this bewitched treasure? Dead men tell no talesPerhaps ye knows too much. ye've seen the cursed treasure, you know where it be hidd'n. Now proceed at your own risk. These be the last 'friendly' words ye'll hear. Ye may not survive to pass this way again. Dead men tell no talesFor trivia buffs, the first phrase is uttered in menacing tones by Disney's reliable vocal talent Paul Frees, who, along with Thurl Tony the Tiger Ravenscroft, also created many of the other pirate voices throughout the ride. The second friendly phrase was croaked out by Imagineering legend X Atencio himself, who was responsible for writing the script and dialogue for the attraction. V

I'm all for the addition of a female pirate (mind you, all the known female pirates of this era dressed as men so as to not be raped as well as how there was a contractual obligation that barred women from being allowed on board, but hey, let's ignore this part of history, but I feel it shouldn't of been in the auction scene. If anything, keep the auction scene and add her later on into the ride. Hell, have her at the end in the shootout, at least then you're not really taking anything away from the ride, just adding to it. This would allow for the ride purists to be happy, but also give a new character that doesn't overshadow who Walt said was the main star of this attraction (the auctioneer.

Oh the countless harm that the auction scene has caused in terms of damage to the psychological well being of millions of boys and girls who have ridden on that ride since 1967. Pirates auctioning off women as something they (pirates) did back then cannot be shown. I guess what will be next will be pirates can not shoot guns because that will lead young children to believe it is okay to shoot people. Not to mention the dunking someone in a well. We might get an upswing in people dunking other people in bodies of water. What about the fire? People might get the idea it is okay to torch a building. Arson. Disney really needs to stop with all the SJW garbage and stop messing with this ride.

That skeleton effect is unbelievable I don't think anyone minds this upgrade from the misty Davy Jones effect, the improvement is obvious. and I'm really happy with the revamping of the auction scene The new props and costumes are colourful and look fantastic, and Redd is a great replacement for her classic, yet aging, predecessor. The scene still fits well with the story but is now more universally appealing. Walt Disney said that Disneyland would never be completed, that it would keep growing and changing to welcome new generations of guests, and these changes seem like a good step in that direction. The whole ride has come out of renovations looking like new

Loving how much people are getting the knickers in a twist over animatronic robot that was displaying a scene that is not appropriate. Selling women (or anyone for that matter) no matter what is unacceptable to serve as entertainment. Your kids will never know that it was any different and they will treasure the experience regardless. Do you know how many rides, experiences, etc that they've changed over the last 60 years in the park? WHO CARES - it's their park and those that complain are still giving them all their money. In your own words, get over it already.

I recently went with a hardcore Disney fan to the park and he was upset with the female pirate. He was saying there should be nothing wrong with how it was before. They're pirates and thats what pirates would. I said, if he wants a realistic pirates, maybe they should all hobble around from the rickets that affected the bones of malnourished seaward travellers, as well as a horrible stench caused by the smegma build up of the many unwashed dicks due to fresh water being a limited resource out at sea. I don't go to Disney for realistic pirates
