Mount Hood: Circumnavigating Hood and Summiting - Mountain trips

The Mount Hood area is awesome. Lots of trails, trees, volcano stuff and endless natural floral arrangements. What starts out as a reported 38 miles run turns into a 44. 5 mile beast with 11, 000 ft of uphill, a lot of it on pumicite. With the memory of the run still making my legs throb I ascend the heights of Hood. I was warned several times about the thawing rocks breaking loose and charging down at me Indian Jones like, but the danger never materialized. Strava Files

Brother, I feel your pain. Wait until you go to Japan and do the Diakiretto arete in Kamikochi. I'm not in your class, so I tried to avoid it but I took the wrong turn. Japanese trails are all designed by the Marquis de Sade. After two of those heart breaking dips, and a via ferata that was about 200' of aluminum ladders (I had the thought, shouldn't I be carrying a section of rain gutter) So I went through two of these dips, and stood at one spot for about ten minutes trying to figure out why WHY? there wasn't a mountain hut there. Then laboriously climbing back up out of the saddle. only to find another saddle. There was this tower with this deep groove. It looked so completely awful and impossible I was convinced that that had to be the trail. I just stood there wondering if I couldn't just somehow spend the next week or so right where I was. Then I noticed some climbers along a not too difficult arete to the left. And the hand holds in the rocks? Never reposition deeper into the same hole, there's another one fight next to it. That hissing coming out of about every 20th handhold? You just woke up a bat. You and Blake would eat this route for breakfast, but you'll be shaking your head at people wearing cotton gloves while doing rock climbing moves.

Danny, I really dig your videos. Production quality and comedy are stellar. 2 questions:
1) where can I purchase the mediocre amateur cap you sport in some videos?
2) as for this video and the circumnavigation, its awesome. Have you heard of the wonderland trail around Rainier? I live right at the foothills and its a sweet trail and difficult AF (93 miles, 24k elevation) if youre trying to get done in a short time frame.
Hopefully you check the comments. And srsly, the hat, TAKE MY MONEY.

Enjoyed the diatribe about gaining & losing vert constantly, that's me on New Zealand trails, totally! Really enjoying watching the films you guys make, thanks so much for taking us along: -) I really hope you guys are hitting the Hardrock lottery; I would love to see you guys run that if someone lucks out and gets in and therefore others could participate via pacing.

I feel your pain. Once I walked the trail with an 86 pound pack. up and down those ridges was killer and dis heartening, but worth many memories. now of course I know better, I was young and dumb then, now Im old and dumb and living vicariously thru your mediocre video lens.

Serious life goals here. I'm not much younger than these guys and they'd pass me shortly after leaving the lodge lol. Can't wait to get in shape and do this. For now I'll keep putzing around Oregon and Washington hiking trails with my day pack.

I see Mt Hood everyday. I was finding all your rants comical. Ill explain something to you. Its Orygone thats why. Not the most with it state by any means. Orygone prides its self on the take 2 steps forward and 25 or more back theory.

what beautiful landscapes friend impregnates me the beauty of the places you visit and I am also struck by the fact that you can travel all those places inospitos your alone, since doing that in my country would be somewhat strained

Omg I feel this so hard about losing all your elevation gain to the river valleys and then having to go back up. My dad and I just did the wonderland trail around mt rainier and had to go through that 1-2 times a day

Another epic trip. but dude, I've seen you cheat the Reaper many times in your vids. Seriously, you always seem one mistake away from having a bad day on the hill. I wish you continued health and safety.
reply

Dude you are a straight animal lol. I thought I was in shape summiting most of Colorados 14ers this season with the whole no work thing but you sir make me feel ashamed haha.

Looking to do the circumnavigation next weekend! Hear that there may be a fair bit of snow left but the warm temps will hopefully take care of that. Thanks for the inspiration!

Anyone know what route Danny took? It looks like the Old Chute. Was this really climbed in August? Dang that is gutsy call to climbing in the middle of Summer. Bravo Danny!
reply

Absolutely insane! For perspective Im a local pdx native this loop trail is recommended as a 3 night 4 day backpacking trip! You did 40ish miles in under 11 hours, epic!
reply

I need to know Danny's workout routine. He just ran a marathon and a half with several thousand feet of vert and slept it off no problem. Demigod status.
reply

What's crazier than accomplishing these miles and times is that he's stopping and filming the whole time as well which means hes really booking it.

Another epic video. I would like to get out and check out the skiing out there and drive up to the lodge. Can you see Mt. Rainier from Mt. Hood?
reply

Ive been told that climbing Hood in August is extremely difficult but you made it look very doable. How hard was the climb. Great videos.

Have run this trail many times, only one of which was clockwise from Timberline. CCW from TL is the best direction (run to the sun.

Magnificent adventures, all! Loving the chance to go along in some sense. Glad you seem to thrive on these unbelievably hard pushes.
