Lake Louise // Niblock and Whyte A Top Ten Scramble in Banff - Mountain trips

Ive seen a lot of pictures of Lake Louise and its red canoes. And in person it did not disappoint. Nestled in the heart of Banff National Park, Lake Louise offers loads of hikes with lots of dazzling views. For this visit I decided to do the Niblock to Whyte scramble with a descent down to the Plain of the Six Glaciers Teahouse. As a bonus summit I also climb up Devils Thumb with nick before ditching him for higher ground. I started at the Lake Louise Hotel and took the trail up to the Agnus Lake Teahouse. From there I climbed up to the Devils thumb then down the backside on a primitive trail. After descending the Thumb I caught the faint trail to the saddle between Niblock and Whyte. I summited Nibloc first then did the loose scramble to Mount Whyte. After that I scrambled the ridge to the south then descending through thousands of feet of scree back to the Plain of the Six Glaciers trail

Nothing mediocre about this guy. Clever and entertaining, and an absolute beast. Riding a rock-alanche with his shoes like he was skiing down a scree-for-all (while videoing it no less. Nonchalantly managing an exposed ridge with abrupt drops of hundreds of feet on loose crap, after an elevation gain of 5-6K feet, and after doing sometihng similar the day before. I was feeling vertiginous sitting in my chair watfching this. Jees! And always optimistic even when the comments turns dark: This is an alternate way down. It looks a little rough but there are tracks and maybe a faint trail---which could lead to a bunch of corpses. [Me thinking: That could be right. ] Then effortlessly throws in a philosphical pearl: Things always look worse from a distance [but] when you get into the mix the path reveals itself. If that's mediocre, the rest of us live in the opposite of Lake Wobegon (ie, below average. Respect.

Awsome footage! I know how hard it is to film yourself but it's totally worth it with the results you get!
Great to see you up here and keep up the awesome work Danny!
I attempted this about 2 weeks after you did it. The lower clif band was covered in snow, ice and veriglas. Also snowed while I was up there. I made it through the first clif band but bailed in the upper basin when there was frost in the scree.
Loose and steep! That's the nature of the Rockies! Such a great playground. Glad you could get up here for a bit and see what there is to see!

When filming one's self:
1) Hike up portion of trail
2) place camera
3) walk back down trail
4) Turn around
5) Run up trail past camera to give the impression of always moving that fast
6) Go back and retrieve camera
Now onto official business.
Without any other Mediocre Amateurs I wasn't holding out much hope for Danny pushing himself beyond his stomach's agreement. Official Counter: Mediocre Amateur videos since Danny's last puke: 17!

I live in Lake Louise and the fact that you scramble Temple the day before puts you in the minority of super fit amateur, i would not recommend real amateurs to do those alone, you made it look too easy. I did Temple 3 times but never done Niblock and especially Whyte it's too exposed for my liking. Impressive feat though, good job.

I did this exact itinerary back in 2013 except but instead backtracked back to the Niblock/Whyte col with a climbing partner I had met that day. He decided to take an alternative route down from the col and ended up needing SAR before the day was done. Glad to see you had much better luck than he, Danny! Great video.

Super neat to see another trail that's very familiar to me! Can't wait to see where else in the Canadian Rockies you checked out - if you didn't get the chance to go up the Icefields Parkway, that's definitely one for the top of the list!

Danny,
Dude, you are the epitome of awesomeness on this hike. You never fail to blow me away with your chutzpah and humour. You are an incredible inspiration to an old goat like me. Keep on climbing you little mountain goat you!

Not sure about your hiking boot choice especially for walking on scree. regardless thank you for the video, been to Lake Louise hiking and skiing it is a wonderful place and the mountains are so different to those we have in the UK

A good chunk of Alaskan peaks are made up of that chossy garbage as well. And its always the summit push where you deal with it the most. ALWAYS.
Another great video, as always.

Wow! Beautiful.
Do people wear helmets doing these scrambles? Not judging, I am a wimp and would be a goof wearing one if I ever got the guts to climb like you.

Love the videos and would really appreciate additional content for instance maybe your dinner conversation at a restaurant after an interesting climb

9: 05, Things look worse from a distance but when you kinda get into the mix the path reveals itself. A brilliant metaphor for life in general.

Once again, thanks to the great Mediocre Amateur advice I will certainly watch out for the faint trails that could lead to a bunch of corpses.

Wow. Epic.
Pretty brave to just go down the scree like that.
If there was a cliffband it would be bruttal slogging back up. ;)

12: 40 the thought of you having to climb back up and get the camera after scree skiing down all of that shows your dedication.

Excellent vid dude -- impressive number of framed shots, high-quality image, awesome 70s soul soundtrack, spectacular scenery.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to bring us along again. You may be an amatuer, but you are definitely not mediocre.
