We started our trip to South America with a hike up Rucu Pichincha a peak that towers over Quito, the Capital of Ecuador. This peak, considered a day hike, has an elevation of 3, 942m (15, 696ft) nearly higher than any peak weve climbed in the past. However, its just a warm up and acclimatization for some taller peaks in our future. First on the list is Antisana an 18, 875ft (5, 753 m) volcano with a 4. 7 star rating on google. Unfortunately, it did get a number of 1 star ratings with one reviewer saying Nothing at all. Bad. But we didnt let these poor reviews dissuade us. With the help of our guide Andrs we found ourselves at the foot of the 4th highest volcano in Ecuador the day after hiking Rucu Pichincha. Getting there was not easy. Navigating the confusing streets of Quito and its suburbs is no small task. The paper work, permit process and guarded park gates made us happy to have Andrs around. Hiring a guide is a new thing for us. Turns out they can make things much easier. Also, we werent sure if climbing some of these mountains was even possible without a guide. It seems the rules on this matter are constantly changing. Just last year skiers were turned away on Cotopaxi by park rangers, but you can find videos online of people skiing Antisana without local assistance. Even people at our ski shop here told us they had been turned around from skiing Ecuadorian volcanoes for not having a Guide. Do some research but if youre looking for a guide and youre a fan of the Suzuki Samurai contact Andrs one of only 3 or 4 ski guides in Ecuador +593 99 77 53 831

Gentlemen, based on my limited ventures to the 15-20k zone, you did quite well at altitude. Kudos - most mortals would have difficulty pulling this off after one acclimation sortie, particularly with Danny switching to a respiratory impediment from the occasional GI one to once again up the ante. And of course, Aaron cruises. Christof, I'm very happy to see you back in the saddle and accomplishing a worthy goal. As an old ER Doc and fellow collector (hip and spine) of unplanned hardware - while knowing you had a significant injury mechanism - you may wish to consider a screening bone scan to rule out a contributing bone density issue if you haven't already done so. Having spent my career alongside Orthopods (several SLC ones, even, they aren't always clued in to this potential contributing factor for individuals possessing your degree of manliness. Meanwhile Lads, I look forward to the next chapter of mediocrity!

Stunning video, beautiful footage, great skiing and I love the fact that you made it quite comprehensive including talks and night footage. I skied Antisana December 20, the day after the group of 3 had died just below the summit. We turned back at the same point of the accident (which we didn't know at that moment) due to high temperatures and a weak snow bridge. Did you encounter any issues with snow bridges or perhaps your guide knew another way? Again, compliments on the summit and the great skiing!

Funny, I headed to Ecuador with the ultimate goal of summiting Cotopaxi this year, but the day I step on the plane the mountain started to rumble; Smaug smelled the intruder.
Wondering how you compare the Ecuadorian volcanoes to the US mountains you've climbed?

Using a guide when faced with complicated and extra spicy adventures is straight mediocre. No need to feel bad about that. I'd never been much for them either, but then went to Peru, hired a guide on two different occasions, and do not regret it one bit.

Memories! Did a guided trip to Ecuador in '96. Acclimatized in Quito doing Rucu Pichincha also. Summited Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. Was on Cotopaxi summit Christmas day at 9AM! -- Back when I used to be in reasonable shape.

People ask me if I need oxygen climbing Colorado 14ers and you all casually walk up an 18er no problem! I can't imagine this being anyone's first outing after an injury. so extra kudos to Christof! Amazing video as always

Great video! And yes a guide is REQUIRED by law in Ecuador after multiple people have died on Chimborazo in multiple incidents (most recent 2020. Avoid death, paperwork and awkward negotiations with Park Service police.

Great video - looks like such a fun trip. You guys should look into the enchantments thru hike in Washington. There are many peaks to summit along the way (like Colchuck)

I don't know why but it was a bit of a surprise to hear that Cristophe (sp) went on a mission. Not surprised they forbid going to the mountains/having fun.

I got so excited watching this one in preparation for Chimbo, that I made my son run laps around the house. He's crying now. Thank you guys. I love you.

That was awesome! We summitted Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in February. This makes me want to go back to Ecuador and do Antisana and a few others.

I loved this video! Nice work, guys! And Christoff, I hope you still value your mission in at least some way. Don't lose all your faith.
