My favorite guidebooks are more like map books. There's an opening for each of the different boroughs of a city, a short overview of what kind of area it is and what you can expect to find there, and the page unfolds into a map of the area. It's very nice and compact easily searchable map to have in a city. Way better than carrying around a huge map of the entire city. Also comes with a public transport map and other useful information.
I'm not very big on restaurant recommendations and stuff like that, I will find a place to eat on my own, but just having a map means I don't have to rely on my phone and google maps with potential data charges and battery life etc.

Not only the phone battery runs out but also before using a new applications on Your phone, check whether this application needs an internet connection (GPRS. This can cost You a lot of money in foreign countries. Normally apps requires that You turn on Your current location option and this works together with internet in Your phone. Alternative is to search for open wi-fi points. There is a new project which will be (I hope it will be) ready in year 2017 and it will provide and internet connection in all EU countries with the same costs per unit MB or GB. This will make our lives easier and also reduces costs for using internet connection in abroad.

Niche guides are also worth considering depending on your interests, I just got back last night from Germany where we were in Hamburg too (must have just missed you) and surrounding towns traveling around the region with CAMRA's Good Beer in Germany book. This took us to places I don't think you'd find in any tourist guide. There will be others like this in practically any field you can think of. On that note, Andrew-Graham Dixon's Art in Germany documentary recently on BBC has given me some inspiration for architecture and art visits I would never have sought out!

Hey Mark, I'm going to Europe in May 2016 and I'm hesitant in taking my backpack. The reason is, because I sewed a bunch of patches on to it of band logos. I don't know if that would make me stand out as a tourist. I want sort of blend in when I go so that I won't be a target for pickpockets. But I don't know if my backpack would just point me out as an American. So what I want to know is, should I take it or not?

nice video: ) personally I never use guide book, I read about the place in the Internet from different sites, and then just walk around and try to find the place also without the guide or gps, and it is so cool, it feels different, like you discovering the place by yourself, you also find the streets, houses and places more cooler than those they talk about in the guide.

I enjoy eating out on the first night of my vacation, and looking through my guidebook to make plans of what I want to see. so much fun, and more relaxing than planning everything in advance, you can be more spontaneous: ) much like with books, I feel like an app can't replace the feeling of looking through a real guidebook with your travel buddy; )

Moleskin has two kinds of notebooks city notebook and passion journal travel. It takes more effort since you have to write everything down yourself by hand. But that way you can fill in just the things you need from several different guidebooks, and just bring one. And if you find some cool places while you're there, you fill them in too.

A lot of travel guides I like her out-of-print now. Like Insight National Geographic Traveler Compass America guides buy folders. Frommer's day by day is gone and DK eyewitness change their format. Photos used to have a see it and exploring guide. They are gone. I prefer the ones with pictures.

Another tip I would add is to check out some guidebooks from your local library. Even if they're out of date or for a different location, you can get a feel for how it reads, how it's organized, if it looks like something you would actually use. Think of it as test-driving before you buy.
