Actually about bathrooms in New York, I find it on par with other American cities though. You expect/wish they would be more bathrooms there because people are out and about seeing the city, but the reality is, its not much different in most cities across the country. Even here in North Carolina its similar, some parks have them, most museums have them, as well as other important buildings, many restaurants have them, although you should buy something at that restaurant and not just use the bathroom for free without buying anything. Some may not make you, but others might. New York is still America, and America is not made for walking. Its weird.

You must be staying in a super crappy hotel to have bad NY water. It actually tastes good. NYC water comes from upstate. Department stores, shopping malls, or any kind of shopping store and libraries, any building that let public visitors which are everywhere have clean bathrooms. It's not really a big problem. Get a room outside Manhattan ( Jersey or Queens ) and get an unlimited 7 day subway pass if you wanna $ave.

New York water has a really weird funky smell. I ordered a cappuccino at a restaurant made with tap water and I was sick as a dog. My advice? Don't drink it. I could never live in New York because of the water, the roaches, and the rats. Also, these hotels are not worth the price. Better to stay outside the city and take the train in. You forgot to mention a lot of these rooms have bad plumbing

The tap water in NYC is excellent - that's why the bagels & pizza crust are so good. Airbnb & vacation rentals are ILLEGAL in NYC in buildings with more than 2 units (which is almost everywhere) & for less than 30 days. Don't do it, you may arrive to find your host has been evicted or shut down by the city for illegal Airbnb/rental activity & you'll have to pay last minute $$$$$ hotel prices.

I am not completely sure on the idea that a person is not able to find an affordable hotel room under $200. Not including the $34 resort fee, I was able to find a hotel five blocks away from Central Park for $90 per night at Times Square. Of course, I had to book the room a year in advance in late January.
Worst expense would come from the airfare.

New York city used to have an excellent aquifer system and very good clean water, and if it's not that way now it could be the old plumbing in the buildings or infrtructure needing new water pipes.
In regard to the occomosations well it's not that expensive when you look around to other countries and their prices for tourist destinations.

i go to new york every year and never spend more than $150 on a hotel, a nice hotel too. i do agree with eating at the diners and bodegas great food and cheap! bathrooms are all over new york city, never had a problem finding one.
i do carry extra toilet tissue just in case though. refills on ice and water at any fast food restaurant.

I will say though, Midtown on the weekends, and we can evenings I will say, during the day its always packed, but if youre there at like five or 6 oclock on Sunday, Time Square might be packed, but dont be surprised if youre walking in midtown Manhattan and you have the whole place to yourself just about.

I stayed at the Roosevelt hotel. its very dated, wouldnt recommend. It is a good location though. In fact we were just a block away from Grand Central but forgot to go there for the whole trip! We kept falling into the trap of heading straight down to Times Square every time.
