Passport Issues: Can I Travel with Only 6 Months Left on My Passport? NO! - Wolters World

Will my passport work if it only has six months left on it? Why didn't they let me into the country when my passport was still valid? These are some questions people have about their passport. Just so you know you should have at least six months left on your passports validity when you are going to travel abroad. Otherwise you may be denied entry. It depends on the country that you are traveling to and where your passport is from

So in fact what you wrote in the title and the description is not entirely true. It depends on the country you're going to whether it requires 6 months' passport validity or not. But yes, a lot do.
You're right - the main reason for this is that the country will grant you entry for 90 days or 3 months or 6 months, and that's what the immigration officer will stamp in your passport whether you're actually planning on staying that long or not. If I, as British, visit the US under the online ESTA visa, my passport gets stamped with a date 90 days ahead even if I'm just planning to stay for a week. That's what's always happened every time I've been there. An American coming the other way doesn't need a visa and will be admitted for 6 months. Stick to the 6 month rule and it'll be valid for the whole period of the stamp.
I don't know about anywhere else but here in the UK, the usual problem people get themselves stuck with is they book a holiday (vacation, get all excited about that, and THEN think has my passport run out? Too many find out it has at the last minute and whaddya know, it always takes longer to get a passport renewed in spring and early summer because that's when people dig their passports out and go AAAAAAGGHHH! Yes, there is an express service to get it done in a week, and another one to get it done in a day, but it costs a LOT more. Plus getting it done in a day means going to a Passport Customer Service Centre in person and that could be miles away - there's only 7 of them in the entire United Kingdom.
Of course if the country requires you to have a visa, you're still screwed because it takes time to get the visa. But what we're mostly talking about here is Brits going for a package holiday on some Mediterranean beach, and they don't need a visa for that.
So a hint for Brits. You can renew a passport up to 9 months before it expires and the remaining time will be added to the new one, so you absolutely do not lose out by renewing early. Do it in the winter because that's the quiet time for the Passport Office, and it'll come back well within the 3 weeks they say it normally takes.

Yeah, had a similar issue living in Greece, renewed at US embassy but when I went to travel again the idiot at security wanted to see the entry stamps on my passport as to when I arrived. I told him I live in Greece now and my old passport expired and was replaced with a new one by the embassy therefore no entry stamps and there was no need to carry the old passport since it had been stamped invalid. A few years earlier I had arrived to Greece through Paris France where we were all herded onto busses to different terminals to catch connecting flights throughout the EU. I questioned the individual who was directing the passengers and they told me we needed no entry stamps into the EU. Fine. When I went to leave Greece another security screener asked how did I get in to Greece, there were no stamps on my passport. Confused as I was I told him my flight into the EU arrived in Paris, he had had enough. His comment, those (explitive) French (explitive) again. He informed me the French were notorious for having VERY lax security in passport control.

Mine is still valid for another 7 years, but Viking reminded us when we booked our cruise that my hubby needs to renew his before we head to France in the spring. Sent it off almost immediately, got it back in a few weeks. We also decided to do CBP global entry, my interview was this past weekend, hubby's is in 2 weeks! No more lines at TSA & Customs. well, at least shorter ones hopefully!

I went on a trip for work from Canada to the US with a Canadian passport in the 6-month club. Usually I'd get a slip from the Kiosk but the machine sent me to an officer instead. I still had no idea why then, but soon realized when I spoke to the officer. The border officer let me through with some questioning.

Here in Costa Rica our passport it's only valid for 5 years. Some countries give 10 years visa, so when the passport that has the visa expires we have to get another passport and travel with the 2 passports: the one that has the visa (and is experid) and the new one.

Passports in Greece are valid for only 5 years, which actually means 4 and a half years of validity. So I stopped renewing my passport and I use my ID card instead. I will get a new passport if I ever decide to travel outside the EU, otherwise it is a waste of money.

Ya know that is so true. Last year, I took a trip over to India and I didn't know you needed a visa to get into the country. I only had a passport. The TSA AGENT was kind enough to help me get an emergency visa took several hours, but eventually I got it

You should make a video explaining the basics of passports - what they are, how you get them, what the difference is between a passport and a visa, etc. Good stuff to know for people thinking about taking their first international trip.
