One thing about tour guides. make sure you hire someone who knows their stuff and is highly recommended! My sister hired two different guides when we visited DC last year. My husband majored in Colonial American history and so I know at least a little bit about it. Our first guide said some strange things that I questioned (my sister and I know enough about tour guides to know there are at least a few who invent information that they aren't sure about - like the guide in Portugal who insisted to me that Catherine of Braganza is buried in England. Given that I overheard another tour guide saying something completely different about the same monument, I looked it up. Yep our guide was way off! But the second guide was amazing and even took us down Embassy Row and showed us all the embassies naming them in rapid-fire fashion - as a bonus! I would say read a little about the places you're going to visit first. but definitely hire a reliable guide!

One last bit about private guides. When they spoke about them adjusting for children. We actually had two babies in the car. And there were times when climbing up an area with two babies and tow, or the time when the babies had just gotten to sleep in their car seats dot-dot-dot the guide was able to give us some tours from our seats in the car, or was able to pull over to a specific spot where we could step out of the car and see the Locale from a vantage point of standing right next to the car. It was totally customized for what we needed at that very moment. I'm not sure we would have gotten anywhere near as wonderful as service if we hadn't gone with a private guide.

Our first and only time hiring a private tour guide was when we went to Gettysburg. Oh my gosh, it was incredible! This guy knew everything about the area, he knew everything about the history, and he could stop and answer any and all of our questions.
This private guide was set up through the Gettysburg (park) Center. They had bus tours you could take and they had private tour guides who would actually get into your car with you and they would drive around. I wasn't quite sure if I felt comfortable with somebody driving my car at the beginning. But all of their ratings were very high so I tried it out. Simply incredible!

I grew up outside of D. C. I've traveled all over the world and D. C. is the easiest city to navigate by yourself! Yes if you want to see all the memorials (boring) hire a guide- but just drive by it on Constitution Avenue is enough. Just get on the Metro Orange Line and get off at the Smithsonian to walk to all the Museums. Parking in DC is impossible! So it depends on what you want to do! Allot of walking involved going to all the museums FYI. There are food carts everywhere and most museums have cafeterias.

I always suggest taking a tour in a city whether it's a private or group tour. They have them. out there for every intrest. They have city tours, history, food, haunted, music. etc. you can tour by bus, trolley, bike, Segway (my favorite. etc. when I was in DC I did a haunted tour and monuments by moonlight which was beautiful. No matter where I go. I do a haunted tour. It's just a fun and informative way to see a city.

Regarding friends wanting to show you the city.
those of you in big cities know that your friends will want to go see a museum or an aquarium or something large in the town. And you'll go with them and all of a sudden say gosh I haven't been here for at least 10-15 years. That happens to me all the time. Would I like to take a tour of Chicago even though I live here? Absolutely!

This is great info. I usually prefer to keep my own schedule on vacation, however I have gone on tours with a group and it is true that you can have experiences that you might miss on your own. It's also better for me to tour with a small group, you just seem to have a better time. Thanks again for the great video!

On our most recent trips we have had private guides, in India, Cambodia and Cuba and it really is infinitely better than either self guiding or group tours, you can ask questions and learn so much more about the guides and their lives than they might volunteer to tell a large group.

If you grew up in a city and you don't know that whole city or been around the whole city, then that's crazy. I grew up in S. E. D. C. and I know downtown just as good as S. E. So when you have family come into your town you don't need to waste money on a tour guide.
