When the hot summer months hit DC, they need to allow waiting in those polls to cool people off to lessen the chance of a heat illness emergency. Thats when people most need to cool off. Another idea is they need to possibly have sprinklers along the walkway that people can use to cool off just like I saw at a theme park out on the midway. You could be walking by and see a stray sprinkler or two, stop and cool off that way in passing. There needs to be some kind of accommodation because there are some people out there with certain types of medical conditions when certain accommodations would definitely be needed and very helpful
Another thing I thought of based on what you described about the escalator and standing on the right, what if someone is an amputee missing their right arm and they need to hang on and it would be safer for them to stand on the left because they have their left hand and can hang onto the handrail? What then? Maybe they should eliminate walking on the escalator at all and those who need to walk to just use the stairs or take the elevator. The amputee without their right hand or arm can easily turn around, but it wouldnt be near as safe for them as it would be if they stood on the left because you need to be ready to step off when the conveyor reaches the top at a certain point. The last thing you want is an escalator accident. Just bringing something to awareness. Im not in the situation, but Im sure theres many people out there missing a right arm who may need to hang onto the left hand rail with their left hand. There MUST be certain disability accommodations and allowances or youll have the access advocates on your back. Thats why those who would rather walk up or down the escalator should instead use the stairs or take the separate elevator if theres one available

As a DMV native of 40 years. WELL DONE! Except Bush Gardens and Williamsburg I would HIGHLY suggest as a separate trip, it's about 3+ hours away. Kings Dominion is closer but still about 2hrs +. Don't come to the DC area for Amusement Parks, but if you MUST for kids sake, Six Flags in MD is the closest but be warned. its ghetto. Instead I'd suggest a few off the beaten path outings to The Inner Harbour, fisherman's warf, or even Baltimore Harbour which is a little less than two hours depending on traffic. But as a tourist you'll most likely have more than enough to do without venturing far from DC proper!
And yes. for the love of god, DONT STAND ON THE LEFT OF THE ESULATORS!

Here are some tips:
1. Go for bike rides on the trails
2. Check out the arboretum
3. Go to the Portrait Gallery and then get dinner at one of the great restaurants immediately around it.
4. Do the Lincoln Memorial at night and then walk over to the Vietnam, Korean, MLK, and FDR memorials. You don't need to see the Washington Monument up close and skip the Jefferson, he was an ass anyway.
5. Maybe skip Georgetown but go to Alexandria or the Hill.
6. Get out to eat on U St, Dupont, or Adams Morgan for a taste of DC. Do 14th St between Rhode Island Ave and Florida Ave for the gentrified DC experience.

Each Smithsonian Museum is huge! You can not see 2 museums in one day and do justice to both. In fact, you can't see everything in one museum in one day. You can only skim.
One summer, my friends and I went to the American History Museum every week after work. We started at the top and worked our way down. It took all summer to visit all the areas and we skimmed some halls.
This was back when we could still park along the Mall for free. Museum had very few visitors. Since we ate before we went, it truly was free touring.
BTW you can't park along the Mall any more.

As a lifelong native the best way to spot a tourist downtown is to see if they have a large sunhat and fanny pack. The standing in clumps blocking sidewalks thing is real. Used to intern at the Natural History (NMNH) the mineral hall there is great. Also fun fact: anyone can enter the supreme court gallery to hear any case proceedings. That said there is usually a line and it's first come first serve.

Don't forget the other Air and Space Museum, the Udvar-Hazy Museum in Chantilly, VA near Dulles International Airport. That's where they keep the Space Shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay, the SR-71 Blackbird (which set the transcontinental speed record on it's final flight from the west coast to Dulles, as well as most of the Smithsonian's big aircraft.

Finally Moved to Tennessee after 38 years in the SWAMP. There are many METRO Stops other than formal 'Smithsonian' station.
2: 35 Phone Staring is not just DC problem.
Never Liked DC area much. There's a Stressful spirit 50 mile radius of the DC obelisk. There's a very pagan atmosphere in DC due to its Masonic Architectural influence

Also Don't Panic and stop dead in the middle of a traffic circle. Go with the flow until your out of the circle, pull over safely elsewhere when you can to figure out how to get back on track.
